I sold my 1930's vanity and the buyer is picking it up this weekend. I've had this piece about 20 years.

I'm cleaning house and this is one of the things I will be missing the most.:(

The Low Down

I only found the Fedora Lounge after the vanity was sold, sorry. I'll be posting other items like this for sympathy and tears.

Anyway, we have a very very small house and my husband has been patient and kind with my collecting for many years. But he put his foot down recently and said "sell or throw out some of this stuff or get a divorce". Hmmm..... Ok, it was a hard decision, so I decided to sell some stuff.

The vanity was refinished and given to me by an ex-boyfriend so I'm also letting it go because I think my husband has always not liked it for that reason too. He promised me either a purchasing trip to the UK for furniture shopping in the future, or buying a small, matching 1930's bedroom set with a butler-style wardrobe. He has very very good taste, so I don't doubt that we'll get something as good or better.

I'll be posting other items in the classified here first. Darn! I just gave away about 6 women's hats (1940's-1950's) a couple months ago. If I had known about this resource, I would have shared with the swinging gals here. I have lots more stuff to go through, so hang in there.:)

Whoever bought that off you needs to count their blessings, because whatever they paid, they got a bargain. That is the most gorgeous piece I have seen in a long time. I know I could never part with such a treasure, so I applaud you for your willpower/discipline!

As hard as it was to give up, rest assured, there ARE others out there (I see 2 or 3 on every outing my wife and I make to antique stores) that range from near mint condition to pretty dismal condition, and nothing higher than $300 in most cases. I've seen them as low as $25 in restorable condition. Most are missing mirrors, but those are easy to have made. We did a Victorian vanity ourselves, and had the replacement mirror made from vintage float glass by a local glass shop for $20.

So, this one is gone, yes, but should you decide to ever replace it, I KNOW you'll find one that you AND your husband will BOTH like, and maybe even nicer in details (that one was a honey, though.)

Regards! Michaelson

Well, I feel better just comiserating with y'all.

My husband also just re-promised me a shopping trip in Europe to replace it in the future, so not so bad, after all. And I got kisses and verbal accolades for giving it up. Always appreciated.

I got $350 for it here in Northern California. While that might seem high in certain parts of the country, it is up to half price here of standard retail pricing (Retail space in San Francisco costs up to $8/sq foot plus the landlord can sometimes receive part of the profits). I'm mentioning the price in case anyone wants to comment.

I also had up to 6 persons interested, and all said nice things when viewing it, but this person bought it on a posted picture(s) and paid promptly.

Aww, that's such a shame that you had to part ways with it. I've been fantasizing lately about owning a home with enough space for a vanity. What a beautiful piece!

The vanity is now gone to its new home. The new owner was very excited and her friend mentioned that the new owner had been looking for a vanity for some time.

Whether it was to humor me or not I don't know, but the friend agreed that the vanitys for sale in the SF Bay Area have been asking for $600-$700 in vanitys in so-so condition.

I sold one just like it last year . In fact it was part of a four piece set. The set had belonged to my grandparents, and I had no room for it. If I recall correctly the set sold at auction for $275. :( This style of furniture hasn't become popular yet with collectors, and brings very little money. You can find it just about anywhere cheap. It will become collectable and expensive , given time...like everything else. Personally, I love the looks of the stuff.:D

You did indeed get a very good price.:)

I guess it's the old 'location/location/location' scenario, as I saw one this past weekend JUST like yours including matching bench, for $250....but then, I'm in Tennessee, and that style just isn't a big seller here like it would be on the West Coast.

Like I said, I see them all the time over here.

Regards! Mark
