Help Me Help the Major Help Me

Put me down for No. 3.

Words fail me, man. Let's just say I really dig that look -- elements of fedora and Western and even homburg (it could be argued) in that one. But it all balances, you know. It just looks right.

Should you opt for that style, or something akin to it, I'd very much like to see what the Major cooks up for you.

GOL! What hat is that!?

I'm not much help on your question except that I know Major Moore is a great hatter and a great fella'. I've had the pleasure of meeting him and handling his high quality hats. Very impressed on both counts.

Now, back to that hat reference photo you posted. What IS that? I love it!

Mr. Portolan, I'd like the looks of Hat #2 but maybe with some side dents to give it a cattleman's crease and maybe in a little different color. Silverbelly or Indycop's butternut color would be good choices for you...my two cents.

Gene and I are big fans of the same hat but I do like the butternut color shown by Indycop. That would be a fine hat.

When I looked at the Az-Tex website, I found another custom design that I like even more. They call it their Campaign Style Western Felt Hat and it is pictured in Pecan.

Now, that's a great hat!

I like the black one , second row down- second hat from the left.

I think one like it in a saddle brown color with a 1 1/2" black ribbon would look pretty sharp. This hat looks like a whippet with a wider western type brim, edge trimmed in dark brown ribbon of course.

What about the Palerider? Now there's a hat that could make me into a western hat wearer.

He doesn't have that block in my size yet, maybe yours though! Of course there is always the 3:10 to Yuma.

I saw the movie but I don't remeber the hat. Do you have any pictures?

I know most on here don't like it but I do minus that band. I think with a good ribbon binding combo it would look nice. maybe even burgundy, maybe not black is perfect on it.

I showed the major the three pics and then the pic

of RBH in the Ranger. We emailed back and forth a bit and he said he was going to block something today (Saturday) in bone or silverbelly. I left the details, final decision and color up to him. So, no, I didn't decide anything. I figured its best left up to the designer! I can't wait to see what he does. Maybe he will post a pic of it in process for all to see!

I really appreciate all your advice. This is a great place and now that I hit 50 posts, I am a "familiar face!" That has a nice ring to it! It will be fun to see what the major makes!

When there is no time restraint, I want a hat in that butternut felt. That is really a great color! I would also like to find an Indy fedora somewhere that isn't quite so tall as the "normal" ones look. I have never worn a fedora, so I don't quite know what to expect. For some reason a tall crown on a Western hat doesn't phase me. But on a fedora? I just don't know how it would look on me. Gee, here I am stuck in San Diego on a nice Saturday. . . five minutes from Village Hats.....must be strong!

The Major Phoned Last Night.....

He is making a Rusty Ranger-type hat in Western weight beaver in silver belly. That sounds terrific. Blocked and sanded yesterday, more to follow next weekend. He asked me how wide for the brim. I don't really like a narrow brim so I told him 3.5 to 3.75 inches. Does that sound right? Something unique fo the band around the crown? Kudos to the major for helping me out with this in the midst of his move. Its gonna be a great Christmas. Phil
