I'd shorten it, but not by much -- maybe an inch, tops. Mid-calf would be perfect. And definitely yes to a single strand of small pearls -- one that hits just at the breastbone would be perfect. You don't want anything that will fight with the neckline, but something that will subtly accent it is fine.

The white shoes definitely, and hang the mud.

Thanks again for your help, ladies! I've shortened my petticoat, found some lovely lavender and white flowers and will shorten the dress a little. Unfortunately, the hem on the dress is uneven, and the petticoat was shortened to be about an inch or an inch and a half shorter than the desired length on the dress, so if I measure the new hem from the current one, my petticoat may show in places. I have no time and no one to measure it for me. I think in order to save time, I will suck it up and buy a hem marker.

I've been searching all over for a white or (preferably) lavender wrap, but nothing. Target has pashminas in lavender, but only available online.

I do have a really lovely lavender pearl set that I made, but the necklace is intricate and I don't want it to compete with the neckline of the dress.

As long as the necklace isn't very long, I think it will be ok. With bare shoulders & a somewhat low neckline - you have a lot of skin to show off some jewelry. Instead of a wrap for added color - what about fresh flowers in your hair?

It is a short necklace that sits right at the base of the neck. I'll just try and see what I like.

Thanks for the flower suggestion! I love the idea of fresh flowers, but won't really have time to hunt around for ones that will work. Also, and I know this is totally silly - but I am horrified of bees, and fresh ones make me scared that I'll get a bee in my hair. Isn't that ridiculous?!!?

I'll still use a shawl or something, or maybe my little white shrug. The wedding I guess is actually happening in a chapel, so I need shoulder covering. I do also have a light grey pashmina that might not be bad.

Since the accent color in your dress is lavender - I bet your local grocery store will have orchid corsages that match it. I always see light pink & lavender ones at the various stores (Jewel, Vons, Albertsons, etc). Plus it's a hardy flower, so it won't wilt in your hair during the day.

I dont know the color of the wedding, but make sure you dont look too 'bridesmaid-sy' you know what I mean?

I'm not really sure entirely what you mean?

I'm led to believe red is one of their colors. I mean, the groom is wearing a red vest and tie, so I assume that's probably a safe assumption to make :)

I meant you dont want to look like a bridesmaid in your completed ensemble. Ive been to a few weddings where that was the case. Perhaps its just my warped way of thinking, pay me no mind.

Oh, I got that part. I just wasn't sure what was suggested as part of my outfit that would make me look like that?

No, I wouldn't go for a full skirt - keep the lines of the late 30s/Early 40s in skirt width or I feel that would spoil the line.

As to fabric, is the redingote a sort of crepe? If so then cotton would probably 'grab' alot, so something a bit more silky might be in order. You could make a couple of different 'slips' to go under it to change the look in whatever colours suit you best.

I personally like maroon or rust with navy, but I don't think these are so much your sort of colours. Red would also look good. It needs a good contrast to really stand out.
Thank you so much for your help! I'm not sure about the fabric! I'm so bad at that. It's very slinky and sheer, the tag say it is a sanforized fabric, if that means anything. Unfortunately I think my best option will just be to sell it - it's about 4 inches too big for me in every direction, so it's hard to create a flattering silhouette. I'd probably be better off starting over with a pattern for a redingote and coordinating dress. :)

They had pretty pastel colored pashminas at Ross a few weeks ago. You might look there if a store is near you.

Two words: don't swat. Life-loving bees don't want to sting you. My yard is full of flowers and therefore full of bees, and I haven't been stung in about 35 years. I just stand still if one lands on me.

I recently purchased a black and silver squaw/patio dress. The fabric is true black, a sheer crinkly cotton) and the trim is all silver/silver and black. At one point it came with a belt and because it is a little bit short waisted on me, I definitely need to wear a belt with it.

These are my 3 choices I have on hand. A black (really a black brownish color) belt, a thin black belt and a quilted semi-shiny belt.

I'm not thrilled with any of these, though right now I like the 3rd one because it looks good due to being a wide belt.

Can someone lead me to a good style of belt for this dress or should I make one in a similar colored black cotton fabric with a black vintage buckle? (i have a few round ones on hand.)

I will wear the dress with a soft and not too poofy petticoat, and my black hand-tooled wedge sandals.

I would put a hand tooled belt with it. I have almost the exact same dress and that's what I wear with mine.

Oh, just any outfit that's TOO put together or TOO matchy matchy, I think she means.

Any pics of the completed outfit? How was the wedding? Did what's her name look bad? lol

Before this wedding, the bride seriously owned one dress. She always seems sort of awkward. We couldn't imagine what she would look like, but she was lovely. Strapless white dress with a red sash and a big bow in the back. The tails of the bow snapped to her dress to keep the beaded design on the tails displayed. She wore a simple skimmer veil and a string of pearls. Groom wore a red vest, cummerbund and tie, bridesmaids had black dresses with red roses in their hair, flowers were red roses and white lilies. Quite simple, and very lovely.

I like the shorter dress length much better, and the matching belt really did work well.

I went with a single strand of pearls, a single strand bracelet and small, plain stud earrings, so that my jewelry wouldn't overwhelm. I thought the gloves looked nice and I've never worn gloves before. I had a short sleeved white knit shrug that I wore in the church.

Made a clip out of the silk anemone I found, and then tucked sprigs of matching silk hydrangea on either side. More hairstyle pictures will appear in a more appropriate thread.
