Hello! This is my first post.

Over the past weekend I picked up this black vintage overcoat at a local vintage store, it was simply marked "French Military" and the owner wasn't sure about the specific period it came from.

Any help from members here in indentifying the coat would be incredibly appreicated!

Similar to a US Navy bridge coat with larger lapels and collars like those on a US Navy peacoat.

In the US Navy, bridge coats are worn by chiefs and officers and peaccoats are worn by enlisted and junior NCOs.

The word "coupe" on the tag is French and the sizing is French too. From spending too much time exploring French firefighter coats, the number 96 is roughly a 38" chest or a Medium, although French military and paramilitary stuff seems to quote the minimum size, so the 96 is the smallest chest that will fit (the next size up would probably be a 104 which is 42"). The letter C means Short (regular would be M and long L). I was to emphasize that's just working from my notes for French firefighter coats, which may not be applicable for other stuff, so don't quote me. Beyond that, I have never seen anything like this, although I haven't really studied French uniforms.
