Hi. I need help identifying my jacket. It has a Conmar zipper and Rau snaps. I thought it was Elk skin. I conditioned it last night and now it's a darker color brown, but the hide was beginning to flake on the collar and other places. It was a light buff/yellow to begin with. Thanks in advance.

If it doesn’t have tags, it will be very hard to figure out who made it. There were a lot of places making custom jackets from deerskin back in the day. I recently picked up one that was described as horsehide. It too is flaking. Be careful what you use to condition it as deerskin doesn’t absorb as well as other hides which could leave it feeling sticky or gummy. Nice looking jacket. Here is a thread on deerskin jackets:

@handymike says it well. Looks like a classic Cossack style jacket. this style in Deerskin/suede was very popular with Men and Women going back to the 20s. The older jackets were made with buttons since they were pre-zipper. Some lined, many unlined.

the age of your jacket can be determined by the zipper. Can't see the zipper well, probably from the 40s.

The Button jackets like this one are difficult to date. This is a ladies jacket with a Penneys label I have only seen twice. Not sure what era.

Thank you for your help. There is what's left of the size tag in one of the pockets. I think it's a 40.
