Walter Goggins identifies a very cool looking Stetson hat (in the first minute) as one of his essential items. I was intrigued by the hat and tried to find it, but google seems to have never heard of a “Red Smith Stetson” hat. I have no choice but to turn to the untapped wisdom of this forum to help identify and link to it.
Thank you.

It’s a Stetson Twenty Five. It may be an Open Road, but not sure with that ribbon. It was made for (or sold to) a guy named Red Smith … that’s not a model name. This looks more like a hat-seller customization when new — not necessarily a custom build for “Red” by the factory, based on the font.

What about the whole “Red Smith” business?

The foods company? It started in 1973 and post dates this hat. If it was a line of hats for a company it would have a custom die made for the debossing. These names done by the dealer were set a letter at a time (note the alignment and spacing).

Red Smith was a famous sportswriter who covered Major League Baseball & horse racing in the 1950’s & 1960’s. He moved around a lot & wrote for several major newspapers as his fame & sports grew. He wore fedora hats. I could see him wearing something like a Twenty-five or a Strat In the later yrs. Goggins hat may have very well belonged to that Red Smith. Red was a nickname. I think his first name was Walter.
