Help I’d this overcoat

Hi All,

I just got this OD overcoat hoping to use it for some period clothing with my car. It looks like an interwar jacket but the buttons are not correct. There is no makers tag in it other than the triangle sticking where I think it was. So I am thinking (hoping) it is a civilian type jacket of the 20/30’s. Any ideas? I will also post this in the military section in the off chance it is foreign military.

Looks military to me. The buttons could well have been replaced.

It has the look of a ww2 officers army greatcoat. These were usually ‘bespoke’ ie privately tailored to fit the officer so if that’s the case here you’ll have little chance of identifying the tailor. If it is a greatcoat then it’s likely the officer had the buttons changed post war?

The stiching detail on the front looks unusual, but its hard to see from the photos.

Something about that triangle stitching makes me think replaced liner. And as Peacoat said, the buttons may very well be replacements. It looks military to me as well.

Definitely heavily re-tailored at some point since those seams up the front are bizarre and there's no way they were original. Civilian buttons. I agree with others that the "bones" look military. The long rear box pleat with the triangle stitching at the top is something you commonly see on Cold War era Warsaw Pact greatcoats. The canvas lining which lines only part of the coat is another indication of a military garment.

Thank you for the info. It was pointed out in the WWII forum that is probably a war or slight post war Belgian or Canadian over cost. It won’t work work for what I needed it for so I will use it as a daily jacket. Unless I can sell it.

There’s a surplus Australian Army coat, 1967, on eBay that looks very similar. Even has the distinctive triangular stitching where the label is.
Someone probably changed the buttons and had it altered (resulting in those odd seams in front).

I used to see those for sale here for around $10 in mint condition going back to the 1940's. I think they are around $50 these days. Not much use here (unless you are stationed in the country somewhere cold) and a massive invitation to moths.

The odd seams up the front show up in the photo you posted, so I guess they're original. Which is really odd, since I usually associate seams like that with women's coats, to provide more shaping in the upper torso area (for obvious reasons).
