To my knowledge there are two main styles of Homburgs, the one from 1901 that has a slight "westerny" look to it, and a later variation that looks something like a Stetson St. Regis!!!!! Do these styles have names??? Because I am really looking for the later version but all that turns up in searches for the majority of the time is the "westerny" style! Help Please!

Westerny:

You're talking about the "curled up brim," right? I think a lot of modern manufacturers make them this way, for some reason. But the ones up top are cheaper, wool felt hats, what you might want is something better quality. I think Stetson still makes a homburg, as well as Biltmore, Dobbs, and even Akubra.

The modern Stetson Homburg unfortunately only comes in black! The Blasphemy... The Audacity it takes for respectable hatters to deprive the consumer of colour choice! The dilemma is that I am searching for a medium or even light grey Homburg of the later style to coordinate with a new DB charcoal flannel suit from Boyd's I have just gotten, that is why I had mentioned the St. Regis because I have found it's most common colour is Grey (but unfortunately Vintage hats are hard to find in 7 1/2!). I do have a good 4- 5 months before the suit is in season so that gives me more time to save up and research.... so please for anyone who spots a 7 1/2 St. Regis for a reasonable price on Ebay or in your own "store" please notify me if it is not much trouble. Thanks for the Reply! And the advice!

Yeah, the Stetson St. Regis is usually grey in most of the ebay pictures I've seen of one. Even my own is light grey colored. It's definitely a nice hat, and if you could get one yourself, that would be great. There are sometimes other brand's homburgs on ebay too, but I mostly see these St. Regis hats appearing there from time to time.

TCMfan25, I have a 7 3/8 St. Regis I'd part with. It's been stretched to fit my 7 1/2 head and is stored with a hat jack inside. I don't really want to sell it, but I honestly don't wear it much, either.

It appears you're too new for PMs. Shoot me an e-mail: williamd.Conwill "at" gmail.com.

Several hatters say they will make a custom homburg as well. Both versions have a curled brim, but what you call the "westerny" one appears to have more taper in the crown, as well as a high and swoopy side curl.
Off the top of my head Dave Brown has photos of both styles on his website, as well as one that's similar to Steve Buscemi's hat from Boardwalk Empire. Optimo also has a couple of real doozies. All these places appear to have lots of color choices as well. I will probably never be able to afford an Optimo or Dave Brown, but they look darn good on the websites.

I have seen the Optimo Homburgs and they are beautiful as well as the Dave Brown ones. I see you live in SD, I was on a website www.thefedorastore.com and it was based in SD, do you know if it is an actual store or simply an online vendor.

I'm a homburg wearer and I'm not sure what you mean by western style. Either not mean they come with wider brim and taller crown... in the good old days a buyer could choose what share suited their face better. Individual makers will curl the brim differently. I wasn't impressed with the Christys homburg. I just recently found a grey smaller crown and brim which suits me fine, but when a put on a larger style it looks like a cowboy hat on my little frame. Is that what you mean?

He's largely an online/phone vendor, but his site does offer custom options from Beaver Brand in both wool and fur felt. It's owned/run by a nice fellow, who does have a physical store which tends to function slightly like an outlet, carrying returned items, or hats that were sized wrong by the manufacturer, etc. I did buy a few from the shop a few years ago, and came out with a nice Silverbelly Beaver Brand fedora that was marked as a size 7, 56, but fit like a loose 7 1/8, and I wear it all the time.

I'm sure he is on this forum. Fedorastore.com guy, if you're listening, maybe you can verify or contest what I'm saying here with more accurate info.

Unfortunately, it's a bit too far for me to drive on a regular basis.
