Hello,

Im a new boy here and was wondering if you could help me and my good lady. She wants to try the victory rolls after watching a you tube lady demonstrating how to do them.

I think they look fantastic and as she likes vintage clothing from the 40s era it would be a great look.

The problem is we cannot find them anywhere, when you ask assistants in hair and beauty stores they look at you like your mad. We have tried ebay to no avail so if any of you kind soles can help please let us know.

Thanks very much, by the way we are from the uk

Here is a pic as a way of introduction.

You can get foam hair rats in Claires accessories, in varying sizes and colours. They are doughnut shaped, but you just chop them up and use them either as a long one, or as two shorter ones that would work for rolls. They're about £2.

She can also do what a lot of gals did in the 40s - collect hair out of her hairbrush for awhile and stuff an old nylon with it to make a rat.

She should try rolls without a rat though. A lot of gals find them easier to do without. They really aren't a necessity. There are several threads here in the Beauty forum on how to do them. Have her check them out!

also if you don't have a lot of hair saved up you can just buy those bags of cheap hair that girls use for braids/extensions and sew them up in a hairnet. i did this for a larger rat for bouffants, but i am sure it would work with sausage-shaped rats as well.

persoanlly I find it easier without rats and as your lady has longer hair than mine I'm sure she will be able to do it without them too. I cheat and wrap my hair around a hair brush handle and then slide it off and pin it.

I think a lot of gals "cheat" this way. For me, the easiest thing is using the barrel of a large curling iron, then sliding the hair off and pinning. It just takes a lot of practice.

I like the rats myself, I have quite a bit of hair but it's so fine and this gives it the ummph I need. I purchased mine on ebay.

Unfortunately I broke my wrist rollerskating the other day and I think it's going to be six weeks of straight hair :(

oh no!! I hope you heal fast and you have someone to tend on you.. maybe even someone who learn to style your hair (six weeks should be enough to learn how to do victory rolls :) )

Thanks Darhling. My husband and children have been very helpful, my girls have been brushing my hair for me however they are 3 and 4 years old so not too sure I would walk out of the house with a "hair-do" they have created! Just as well though I should at least let them try, it will be fun if anything. I don't think my son will want in on the action. lol

I can't even imagine doing rolls with a rat. I think it would be hard.

I've tried it and I think it's impossible! There's really no good way to do it without the rat showing.

I use rats made the 'old-fashioned' way out of hair from my hairbrushes.

She can also tease the hair to give it some structural support and go without a rat, using some of the techniques the ladies have mentioned. She would look lovely with rolls. Try experimenting with positioning the hair part differently for various looks. I like an asymmetrical look myself.

Are you talking about victory rolls or pincurls? Some girls here have talked of using them for pincurls, but those are way to small for victory rolls.
Well, let's see, for the last 15 years i have been using them for Victory Rolls, i wind them then will i pull the peg out i relax them a bit, they work a treat for me !

I do something similar - I roll mine around a small-barrel curling iron (on if it's already on, off otherwise) or around a marker, and then slide them off and un-wind a bit.

I also use a sharpie to make pin curls so that they turn out uniform.
