Up for sale is one of our new reproductions the A.G Spalding Bros Model 722 flight jacket. This jacket has not been reproduced by any other company and is a very unique vintage style flight jacket that looks fantastic when worn.

The jacket bears a remarkable resemblance to the early A-2 jackets produced in the 1930's. This is an interesting fact that needs more study but it would appear that the jackets may be related. Which one came first is unknown at this time.

Original Catalog Drawing:

Spalding was a major producer of flight gear and clothing throughout the 1920's and 1930's. This jacket was made by Spalding sometime in the early 1930's. This jacket appeared in their flight gear catalog featuring gear from the 1920's through the 1930's.

The exact date this model of jacket was made is unknown. The fact that it features a "Hookless Zipper" narrows it down to the late 1920's or early 1930's. A surviving example of this jacket has not been discovered. We were able to reproduce this model from the catalog photos and descriptions, as well as studying other jackets and leather flight suits made by Spalding in the late 1920's and 1930's.

The Model 722 was made from Capeskin leather described as "Glove Leather" in the catalog. This was a common name used for Capeskin in that era. The available colors were Newport Tan or a Navy. Our version is made in Newport Tan Capeskin and features a reproduction early 1930's Hookless Zipper and genuine horn buttons.

Is that the same Spalding that made the sporting equipment?

Yes. They had a division of the company that made aviation gear and clothing. They actually supplied the US Army with flight helmets and other gear in the early days of aviation. Before the Army Air Corps was formed, when it was called The US Air Service.

Spalding went on to produce a wide variety of civilian flight gear and clothing throughout the 1920's and 1930's. The labels proudly proclaimed that they had manufactured gear for the US Air Service as seen on our reproduction of their civilian label.

Spalding also was involved in the A-1 jacket program and they are listed as one of the manufacturers that submitted test jackets for the program. I have not found documentation of the final selection of all the manufacturers that won contracts for the A-1 jacket but Spalding certainly could have been one of them. We do know that Gordon & Ferguson and Mirabelli Bros made some of the contracts but there are other slightly different A-1 jackets that seem to have been made by other manufactures. Spalding could have made one of those contracts.

They were a very prolific producer of aviation gear in the 1920's through the 1930's and more research needs to be done to find out what programs they were involved in.

Thanks for the post! These jackets are a piece of history and very interesting to me as well. That catalog you have is a reprinting of the original catalog from the 1930's and has some very unique designs and equipment included. One of my favorites is the inflatable floating flight suit for use in the early "flying boats" of the 1920's & 30's. Also note the price of $25 for the 722 model!
