I saw this book in London and I doubt many of us here will be interested. It's a big coffee table sized book of photos that look like they are from a catalogue shoot. The best part was the section on day formal wear. The rest looks like an (non-porn) A&F catalogue. I fully intended to buy this book sight unseen until I happened to have occasion to see it in person. I passed.

All photos are contemporary, BTW.

Look for these two instead. The one on the left is scarce, out-of-print, and expensive, but can be found in the reference sections of some libraries.

I have the Men In Style book and it's okay... I get more out of looking at Getty Images.

I wish i had the Encyclopedia and believe Zohar has a copy.

Old Sears catalogs are masterful in their images and it really shows you the variety which we have lost over time.

I'll probably end up buying this new book like all the rest as I do need to keep the library supplied.

Check out Manton's book The Suit when you get the chance as it has alot of information, some with which I agree and some I do not, though it is very easy to read and shows a contemporary look at how the men in power and with popularity dress and gives tips on how they should.

I myself still am enthralled by the look of old Hollyood and what the shops were able to produce for the patrons back n those days.

Double Breasted in a subtle pinstriped grey with a belt back and patch pockets would be great for my boardroom wear.

I get tired of the two button navy blue flap pockets dry as a cracker look all the poloticians are sporting nowadays.

I guess it's me being a Californian, though I don't remember pictures of Howard Hughes in his boardroom looking as boring as those I see of Trump and his box cut suited regeme with fat ties and one color suits.

I don't remember Roosevelt standing around a sea of Navy Blue suited, white shirted and red tied senators. I want to see style return.

I finally found a copy of the Encyclopedia at a used book dealer's in England. It was a former library copy that I obtained for significantly less than the other prices I've seen, but the cost was still horrifying.

The Esquire Encyclopedia is one book I would love to have. The copy I found, some time ago, was at an on-line dealer for a very large sum of money.

Those are in line with most dealers I've tried for a decent copy. I got very exited visiting a shop in Virginia once that said they had a copy in very good condition. There were clearly not using accepted ratings for when describing the book. When we got to the store a local high school student said, "Well, its in very good condition for its age." Ahh well...

Might I suggest a visit to your local university library? Many U. Libraries have back periodicals in bound editions.

Yes, you don’t get to own it but you can pass the time thumbing through old copies of magazines.

Last Friday I checked out the volume of Sept-Dec. 1935. Thumbed through it on the weekend and sent it back.

You could photocopy the pages but perhaps that would get expensive, and no colour. What I am going to do next time is attempt to photograph the adverts I want with the digital, (colour and no paper). I suppose a scanner would work but I am sans-scanner.

At any rate sorry for the rant. Just a thought.

You are quite right. Definitely a book I have and will continue to read in the library - that's how I first found it.

Just one more thing to covet... Like some of my collection, where I can't find an original within my budget, I have found some sellers who have good quality reproductions / photocopies for sale (with leave from the copyright holders). These are great place holders for an aspiring collector.
