Heads Up - British 40s Jackets for cheap ...

Guys. Wartime (apparently) British jackets. 20 quid a piece buy it now. These were typically relatively well made. One large one small. I just snapped up the smallest one. Pity the seller is scalping for postage outside the UK. The first link is too long for me, the other is way to big for me ... Happy Buy It Now-ing. Yep, Navy blue w/ wide pinstripe DB. Sweet. The same size, pretty much, as one of those others but three inches shorter in the body.

Man, i buy stuff cheap from the UK, have it shipped to my parents in Scotland and then they ship it to me over here. There is NO WAY it'll cost 28 quid to send this jacket over to the US!

Why is the first jacket buttoned right over left?

Either the seller thinks it's a woman's jacket (since it's pretty small) or just doesn't know which way to button it up - quite common.

Or, even, the jacket has been worn lately by a woman, so it has the under-fastening button on the 'wrong' side. Also common.

The jackets from this seller, by the way, are very good quality. They are what they say they are. 40s British. Don't know what she's got right now ...

Bertie Wooster has a mixture; not so much 'vintage' vintage- I think I got just about the best of it in that 3 piece tweed, which could be '50s, maybe even '60s. The narrow-ish lapels aren't so telling of vintage in Country attire- it didn't follow the 'City' fashions of the day so closely and some of it was 'trying' to be conservative- maybe even utilitarian.
BW have some nice used bespoke but also a fair amount of 'rack' menswear.

Old Hat is definitely worth a look for the pygmy sartorialist- plenty of choice in the smaller sizes.

It seems the Chaps from The Chap are regulars there and nothing above a s40 lasts longer than a few minutes.

Radio Days at Waterloo has absolutely nothing as far as suiys are concerned.

by the way i used to work at Radio Days circa 2000. but the glory days were already over by then.
i never find anything when i go to Old Hat. the owner told me that if he ever gets a quality 40s suit in, it goes straight to Japan. i leave that shop in a bad mood whenever i go.

I too was a regular at Radio Days- I was living in London from '94-2001.

What size are you HBK..?

I was in Radio Days on last Monday- they had a lot of cheap/new Fedoras for sale.

Old Hat had the '40s suits, one was a blue SB, nice lapels, s40, the other may have been a 38. Both mint.
David Saxby had one of his personal Tweed 3-piece suits for sale and it was classic- but size 38... The window of his Tailoring shop next door is impressive but he was performing some shopfitting when I was there, so I couldn't get a look in inside.

I didn't make it to Earls Court for the Expo; I remembered my manners and stayed in, embibing of ales with my host and hostess on Sumner St., SE1, with the Tate Modern looming in the back window- then up to Spitalfield Market in the evening for some noisy bands and more suds and of course, chips on the bus home.

It was a great London getaway weekend.

if i'm looking for stuff on ebay a 17" shoulder seam to shoulder seam meassurement, and 20" pit to pit measurement gets my pulse racing.
