Heading to Salt Lake City Thursday and only taking one hat. Anyone in that neck of the woods have a suggestion felt or panama? Looking at weather could go either way. Have a natural panama that can be worn after Labor Day . I can wear it here on the coast but wonder if I would not be better with a felt in SLC. Any suggestions appreciated

I don't live in SLC but I've spent time there and now live in Tucson, AZ. Full disclosure: I only wear felt hats because I don't like straw (IMHO, straw is unreliable and fragile; not the qualities I value in a hat).

Disclosure aside, this part of the year is the end of the desert monsoon. It's highly possible that you'll experience beautiful lightning and large quantities of rain descending very quickly. However, SLC in September is still pretty toasty, and if you're unfortunate enough to combine with rare humidity, it can be quite challenging.

Personally, I'd suggest taking a felt hat, and take a handkerchief with which to wipe your brow/neck as necessary.

Agreed on SLC's unpredictable weather this time of year. While I've never lived there, the four times I've driven through this time of year I have always run into some intense thunderstorms of nice black thunderheads that show gorgeous lightening storms and buckets, buckets, bathtubs of rain. That being said, I'd personally not risk a straw hat, and I'd be inclined to wear a less-expensive felt hat too. If you have a featherweight it might be the way to go.

Hi

If you have a Sunbody grass hat, that would work, but I'd wear my Sahara colored Roughrider hat with the 3 inch brim.
