Man I love Hawaiians. To me nothing is better for summer casual wear than vintage kahki's ,white bucks, and your favorite hawaiian.

Originals and Sun-Surf Hawaiians by Buzz Rickson / Toyo Indutsries. They reproduce the classics from the golden age right.

Avaintis are o.k as casual lawnmowing hawaiians.

Thank god for Sun Surf though... Other wise it's just a big wallet throw down contest.

Sun-surf's are cheap and affordable compared to originals. I started collecting hawaiians back in 95 ...Now they are worth so much dough I just flip them when I find them.

Maybe outside of ww2 flight jackets the most expensive pieces of vintage.

I have all the ones I ever wanted .... I think.

I must say i'm the other way around i like Avanti but don't like sun surf. The reason well Avantis have some fabulous original prints from the hey day and are made of silk. The sun Surf also have some fabulous patterns but are made of some sort of non rayon rayon. Now i have at home here a shirt made by Hanalei and the patternn and rayon are perfect just perfect but it is sweaty for dancing where the Avanti are fantastic.I have on order some of the re-made Kamehameha shirts and can't wait i'm told the rayon is silk like in it's feel just as it should be.Kamehameha shirts have been going since 1936 and have all the originals patters and colours in thier archives and are just re-making the original silkies again.I must say rayon hasn't been the same since the du-pont factory burnt down.Although i love myAvanti shirts they haven't been without problems ,for a start customer service is bad also some of my shirts have come through marked and third when you tell them they don't seem to care.I now buy my Avanti's through www.hotshirts.com the customer service is great and they are fast.I will let you know how the Kamehameha shirts go but if you can get a nice pattern Avanti without the hassle then they are a good shirt i have worn one constantly over 5 years and it's as good as new even after 200 + washes...........Paul

I don't mind Avantis at all they are good knock arounds.

I bought ten of them when I was on my honeymoon in Hawaii.

You are right when you say that they can take a beating, and that to me is the best selling point, but the cut is all wrong when compared to originals.
And their screens are fuzzy compared to sun -surfs.

The dupont factory never burnt down, with the recipe lost..... that is a fallacy, started by collectors to drive the cost of originals up. If you get a chance purchase.
Dale Hope's The Aloha Shirt book.
The Bible of all things Hawaiian shirt related.

The Haneli's are awesome too by the way. They do feel like originals right out of the box

The reason why they don't make them out of the old nitrocellulose based rayon is because of cost.

But if Kamehameha starts making them again the old way... people will be lining up,me included.

Come down near to me at Freshwater Beach in Sydney Down Under and the have a full sized surfing statue of the great Duke to celebrate his visit of 1915 and push to get surfing started big time.

Hawaiian shirts are great! While I have no really vintage ones many of the newer ones retain the theme of the old ones. Thrift shops is a great place to find them.

I am a huge fan of Hawaiin shirts. I have several, but I do need a vintge one. Wasn't there a thread here once that had a link to a site that made vintage remakes?

Pardon my ignorance, but what are "white bucks"? Nevermind. I googled them. White with Khacki pants huh? Incidently, when one is looking for a good Hawaiin shirt, is cotton preferable over Rayonor vise versa?

Strictly speaking in vintage Hawaiians / Aloha shirts the rayon ones are the most valuable and command the highest price.

Unless you are speaking of the back panels by art vogue and other makers. These even in the typical cotton "sack cloth"----retarded expensive.

Rayon prices are often double for the same print in a cotton shirt.

The rayon also comes in many different hands, or feels, as well .
There is the really good stuff used by a lot of the premier shirt makers from 37 to 55 or so.... heavy , drapey and feels and breathes better than silk.
These are often referred to by the collectors as "silkies"

Then there are pure silk ones which are very fragile and they usually have pure silk tags around the neckline and then cotton and others.

But yes for sure the original rayon ones are the most desirable.

Thanks. I live close to South Padre Island, so I have worn Hawaiin shirts for a long time. I currently only have 3 including one beautiful silk jobbie.

I'm wearing one right now.

I just buy the "cheap" ones. The one I'm wearing now came from the Dollar General store and cost me something like $8.99. There are no old ones that would fit me, and I'm not up to spending $40-$50 or more on a Hawaiian shirt. These do me fine. I wish the collars were wider, in '40's style, but that's too much to ask, isn't it?

Gotta be rayon. ;) Hawaiian print or other styles of "camp shirts".

I used to have a pretty good collection of Hawaiian shirts, over 30, several vintage but mostly repros. Then I discovered linen and found it to be a much cooler fabric, so I dumped all but a handful of the Hawaiians. [huh]

Aloha

I lived in Hawaii for a few years and I collected about 20 Aloha shirts. If you ever get to Honolulu their is this great little vintage store that carries hundreds of vintage Aloha shirts. Although I can't remember the name of the store right now. It is off the typical tourist beaten path. I am sure they have a web page. It is getting warmer here, in Virginia, and it is time to break out the Aloha attire and put the top down on the car. They are great for any occasion. When I lived their "dressing up" was wearing a pair of Khaki pants and an Aloha shirt. BTW, never tuck an Aloha shirt into your pants. I see this all the time and it really bothers me. :rage:

You must be talking about "Bailey's Antiques", the best collection of Hawaiian shirts for sale on the islands, as well as lots of other vintage items. They have some real pricey shirts, as well as contemporary ones. A must visit every time I go to Hawaii.

That's it!

That is the name of the place. I used to go into that place a couple time a month. You are right, they do have some pricey stuff but allot of reasonable prices as well.
