Robert kennedy arrived for a quick campaign speech after dark at 9pm..May 1968...in a freshly waxed shiny black Caddy limo. Attempting to jump on the hood to make a speech to about fifty of us..he slipped and went down. I caught him around the chest to keep him from falling to the street. Rosie Greer caught me around my whole body at nearly the same time. Kennedy gave a twenty minute speech..then stopped to thank me and asked my thoughts about his speech. I then shook hands with both him and Greer. Afterwards,I had wished that I had gotten his autograph. He was killed several weeks later.

I've seen a couple, but never met any....

When Weather Man was shooting here in Chicago, I got caught on the street where they were filming a winter scene.... so there I was, in the middle of July, standing ankle-deep in manufactured snow surrounded by car plates and signs saying I was in New York, and Nicholas Cage across the street. Quite fun.

And I've seen John Cusack downtown in a Starbucks. I nearly died

A few "greats" and "minor" stars off the top of my head :fedora: -- all a part of the fabric of my life...

Musicians: Kansas City's own local jazz drummer 40's-50's legend Sam "Baby" Lovett -- sat in during a gig in 1962; another Kansas Citian Marilyn Maye; and Don Ho.

Actors: Dick Van Dyke, Barry Van Dyke, Victoria Rowell, Scott Baio, Dyan Cannon -- all while working as a background extra (read: 'unemployed' ) on the set of "Diagnosis Murder" in 1994; Carol Lynley -- (world's most gorgeous blue eyes!); and Maud Adams .

Politicians: Ted and Edward Kennedy as they stumped for votes :beer: in 1964 at the Blue Anchor Bar in New Bedford, Mass .

Personalities: Trevor Denman -- the voice of Santa Anita and Del Mar Race Tracks and arguably the greatest track announcer in the history of thoroughbred horse racing; Jaime Jarrin -- the hall-of-fame "Senor Dodger" -- Spanish Voice of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

I met Sparky Anderson at a baseball field in Thousand Oaks this March when my son played baseball against Cal Lutheran. In an age where no one signs autographs without getting paid he signed baseballs, took pictures and was the nicest man you could imagine. But what impressed me the most was when I shook his hand and said that it was a pleasure to meet him. He placed his other hand over mine and looking up at me with those sparkling eyes said " No, the pleasure is mine ". I melted.

In 1983, when I was only 15, I literally bumped into Fred Astaire on a stairway at the Beverly Hills Hotel. I was walking up, he was walking down (and quickly too). No elevators for Fred, thank you, even though he was in his 80s at the time!


I saw him for only a moment and mumbled my apologies. Astaire didn't say anything, just kept on walking. I remember that he was wearing a houndstooth tweed jacket, tan trousers, and an ascot. Short and thin. Passed away a few years later.

Although my dad died suddenly at age 82 before he could officially join the Lounge, he enjoyed reading the posts with me. If I may I will post some movie stars with whom he acted. He said Roddy McDowall was very nice, intelligent and a lot of fun. Ann Blyth was also very nice, beautiful and talented. Freddie Bartholomew and my dad became good friends. He was very sweet, so nice and down-to-earth, impeccably dressed. I had no idea he was the movie star, until I asked if he were the same, and I have many Christmas cards he sent us over the years.

Mr. Koneig was the sweetest. He talked to everyone and let people take pictures with him.

And I did once pass those identical twins from San Francisco in their 80s who used to do the Virgin ads. They were dressed in matching red suits and pillbox hats. They were amazing...

Last Monday week I met Caroline Munro (specifically from Dracula AD 1972) - it was a surprise appearance in order to introduce the screening. About 15 people watched it, so we got a time for a decent chat with her.

I've also met Rev. Lionel Fanthorpe - I'm not sure how well known he is - but I think he's a celeb. He rides a Harley Davidson and is into UFOs, Ghosts etc...

.. and I met quite a few comedians whilst at college/university.

As a former radio reporter, I've met quite a few celebs, including Presidential candidates Harry Browne (very nice & classy) and Pat Buchanan (very charming), actor Jonathan Frid (nice guy), baseball player Kenny Lofton (very quiet), actress Shannon Tweed (a real swell gal), and football player/actor Fred "The Hammer" Williamson (a bit aloof but friendly).

I've also met a number of political figures, including Tom Foley, Phil Gramm, Bill Bradley, Henry Cisneros, Evan Bayh, Richard Lugar, Dan Coats, and George Ryan. Of the above, only Ryan has rubbed me the wrong way. In addition, former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert is an old family friend.

However, the one encounter that has left the biggest impression on me was meeting Arthur Ashe. He spoke at a student-athlete role model conference in Gary just days after the press leaked that he had HIV. I can tell you that I have never met (and may never meet) an individual with the class, grace, dignity, and integrity of Arthur Ashe. He answered all our questions without reluctance or reservation, and I even got to shake his hand.

I have been fortunate enough to meet several celebrities in my lifetime. I met JFK, LBJ, Nixon and had lunch with Alexander Haig at the Watergate Hotel. Newt Gingrich was a college professor of mine. I spent an afternoon in a small bar outside of Atlanta with Eddie Rabbit and have met George Jones, Garth Brooks, George Strait, Alan Jackson, and the original Lynyrd Skynyrd band. While living in Hawaii as a child I shared breakfast daily with our next door neighbor Eric Fleming (Gil Favor from Rawhide fame).

The man that lived across the street from me owned the top nightclubs in the Buffalo, NY area when I was growing up as a kid. I got to be good friends with his grandson who happened to be the same age. I was able to meet the following stars:

1. The Three Stooges---Moe, Larry and Joe DeRita
2. Dick Shawn---was a nephew of the nightclub owner
3. Sammy Davis Jr.
4. Frank Sinatra Jr.
5. Danny Thomas
6. George Jessel
7. Frankie Avalon

When Paul McCartney was in Phoenix, AZ in April of 1990, I managed to finagle a press pass from a magazine I had done some photography for. Sure enough they had my credentials at the Sun Devil Stadium press box and I went onstage with eleven other photogs to shoot Macca! They allowed us to shoot just the first three songs and then escorted us off and out. I shot both color and b/w with two Nikons and captured some great stuff in about ten minutes time.

I'm sure Paul noticed me, cause I could tell by his expression and the raise of his eyebrow, he must have been thinking, "..hoo's that bloody git? Geroff the stage yer daft bloke!" Yeh. I think I've got that in a picture!

He's the only Beatle I've been close to. But Ringo had a chance to see me from his limo window outside Western Airlines at LAX back about '78. He was already inside the car, behind tinted windows. But I'm sure he saw me!... he probably was thinking, "..hoo's that bloody........"

So two Beatles have had a chance to meet me it seems. I'll bet they're writing about it on some forum thread somewhere too! (LOL) lol
