From the movies: When I was about 8 or 9 I met Gene Hackman who was filming in San Francisco (early 1970s). From music: The late Arthur Lee of 60's rock group LOVE. Very nice in person and able to drink large amounts of hard alcohol and appear perfectly sober. The late Cliff Burton (original bassist for Metallica). This was before they became big. Myself and a friend had a few drinks with Cliff in a bar on Haight st. in S.F. Burton was the one genuinely nice guy in that group. Rob Halford from Judas Priest. Very nice. No rock star attitude. I didn't meet but saw from fairly close: Chuck Norris. Very short man. dressed in black. Willie Brown, former mayor of San Francisco. I saw the mayor many times. He used to (maybe still does) get the little remaining of his hair cut at a barbershop in my old S.F. neighborhood. He wasn't unfriendly, but was always in a hurry. David Prowse the actor/bodybuilder who played Darth Vader in the Star Wars movies. I met him in 1978. I have a picture of myself standing next to him. He picked me up,but my Dad didn't get a shot of that!

A couple years ago at the Stardust in Las Vegas, former Dodgers Manager Tommy Lasorda was sitting in the table in front of mine with a couple guys from The Sorpranos, Larry King walked by the table, and John Stamos was three tables away.

In 1986 at the old MGM, now Bally's, in Las Vegas I saw the Smothers Brothers walking past us in the lobby.

The 1960's latin band; The Amigo's are friends of my parents. They also did the 1970's PBS show; Villa Alegre.

Former San Francisco 49er great Leo Nomellini was a friend of my Uncle Herbie and used to go to his shop to get his shoes repaired.

Cindy Williams and a couple other cast members from American Graffitti were at the Cow Palace giving autographs last year at the Custom and Rod Show.

My aunt met Jimmy Durante when she was Hawaii Governor John Burns Secretary;

Michael Dukakis came by the University of Hawaii and was talking to one of my professors when I walked into the office.

and the most memorable one yet; I met Ronald Reagan's oldest daughter Maureen at a campaign event in Hilo, HI in 1988. :eusa_clap

I've never met a movie or TV star but I did meet President-elect Kennedy and several members of the Kennedy family in November, 1960, when I was nine.

My family was driving past the airport in Hyannis, MA when we saw a crowd gathering. My mom guessed it might be the Kennedys arriving so we stopped to check it out. Sure enough, it was the whole Kennedy clan arriving in their private DC-3. I was able to shake hands with JFK...probably my most memorable experience.

Needless to say, I was devastated by the events of November 22, 1963.

Ran into Robert Ito of Quincy fame in a 7-11 in Alhambra California. Can't think of any others after all my time in the area though.

I received an invitation to the White House from the First Lady in June 1963, to a party hosted by her for the children of the diplomatic corps posted in Washington D.C. I was in 8th grade then. Jacquline Kennedy and Lynda Bird Johson, LBJ's daughter, were in the receiving line, so I shook hands with both of them. Ditto to the last line, we all went downtown to see his cortege, it was a very sad several days.

I've also met a number of jazz musicians. Dolly Baker a.k.a Dolly Parton, Salena Jones a.k.a Joan Shaw, and Freddie Cole, Nat King Cole's brother, all at a small and cozy jazz club in Tokyo that I frequent. As a matter of fact, I was at that club, having a conversation with Salena when in walked Freddie Cole, and she squealed, "Ooooh, Freddie, when was the last time I saw you? I would never have expected to run into you here!"

Never on my own terms. Both my parents work in the quote-on-quote Biz, so my childhood was full of shaking hands with this guy or this guy. Denzel Washington. Tom Hanks. Gary Sinise. Kevin Bacon. Martin Sheen. Arnold. Hundreds of others that I barely recall.

I park at director Curtis Hanson's house when I go to the beach. I reportedly used to nap in Emilio Estevez's office. And Jim Henson once sketched me a drawing of Big Bird on the spot, signed it and gave it to me.

But the most I've met on my own is Bruce Campbell once at a book signing.

I met him at a family event and had the chance to shake his hand and thank him personally for some very important charity work that he has done. I sat down and talked with him for about 20 minutes or so. He's a nice guy.

Oh yea, I once interviewed Neol Davies of the Selecter for my Ska/Mod/Soul radio show back in college. It was a crappy interview but I think I have it on an old tape around here somewheres.

I've seen a few, but never really met any, apart from one or two I've talked with in my business.

Recently though, I attended the Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony for legendary Los Angeles radio DJ Rodney Bingenheimer, and there were quite a few musicians there, and also actress Pauley Perrette from the TV show Navy NCIS and who looked adorable in her Betty Page hairstyle.

I work for a TV shopping network at a TV studio complex in Glendale California, so I've stood in many a star's parking space, but never actually got to meet any.

Oh yeh!....

When Paul McCartney was in Phoenix, AZ in April of 1990, I managed to finagle a press pass from a magazine I had done some photography for. Sure enough they had my credentials at the Sun Devil Stadium press box and I went onstage with eleven other photogs to shoot Macca! They allowed us to shoot just the first three songs and then escorted us off and out. I shot both color and b/w with two Nikons and captured some great stuff in about ten minutes time.

I'm sure Paul noticed me, cause I could tell by his expression and the raise of his eyebrow, he must have been thinking, "..hoo's that bloody git? Geroff the stage yer daft bloke!" Yeh. I think I've got that in a picture!

He's the only Beatle I've been close to. But Ringo had a chance to see me from his limo window outside Western Airlines at LAX back about '78. He was already inside the car, behind tinted windows. But I'm sure he saw me!... he probably was thinking, "..hoo's that bloody........" ;)

So two Beatles have had a chance to meet me it seems. I'll bet they're writing about it on some forum thread somewhere too! (LOL) lol

Just remembered a couple more --

I used to interview a lot of politicians when I was in radio, but the one that really stands out is Ross Perot. He made a campaign stop here in '92, and I got a chance to talk with him afterward -- and I don't know if he was like this all the time or what, but he came across as rather manic: all he wanted to talk about was how disappointed he was that the Rockland District High School Band didn't know how to play "Crazy For You" when he walked out on stage for his speech.

We used to see Kirstie Alley on the streets and in the stores all the time -- she lived on one of the islands offshore from here, but after she flew off the handle when somebody talked to her in the grocery store we locals learned to pretend we didn't see her. We also would pretend not to see John Travolta when he came to town to visit her.

It's that guy, you know that guy from the tv thing, you know...

Spoke to Dave Mustaine from Megadeath at a guitar show a long time ago.

I nearly knocked over Donald Sutherland at a restaurant opening, accident I swear! I said excuse me and he smiled.

Talked to Robert Stack at the Tower Records in Pasadena a long while back.

Asked Jeff Goldblum to pose for a picture with my cousins from Denmark in a Shop on Melrose about 4 years ago.

Complimented Peter Weller on his movie work at one of the Big Smoke's in Vegas a number of years back.

Spent time with Huell Howser when he did a Visiting Episode for the Southern California Pen Collectors club about a year and a half ago.

Met Gordie Howe(hockey player) a few times.
