They tried that. But OF COURSE it was for advertising purposes, and OF COURSE you couldn't turn it off because then people wouldn't sit thru the advertising. So they were vandalized and beat on and pulled apart, and with surprising swiftness disappeared.

Besides, I want my NYC cab experience laconic, jaded, slightly grubby, and always with one toe planted gingerly in the state of dystopia, to remind me of what might be if we all don't watch ourselves. A TV in the partition destroys that, I don't care if it plays nothing but early Scorsese and Lou Reed videos.

My granddad was a cabbie (owned one of the last Checkers in Philadelphia...before he wrecked it...) and he never would have tolerated anything but music of HIS choosing. That's jazz or classical and if you were to give him a hard time about it you could have listened to your cabbie LECTURE you on how the music is GOOD FOR YOU.lol

TVs playing commercials? Fuhgeddaboutit. My Zayde would not approve.

I used to write (and still sometimes contribute) to some of the underground tabloids that deal with aliens and conspiracy theories as a skeptic (and besides, it's fun to rile the crazy people). I QUIT going to conventions because some kook broke into my hotel room, and kidnapped me for the three days of the convention (to make me believe I suppose).

Rational? Not the die hards. Fun? You bet.

I was a confused child who thought things would always stay the same! I used to wear mop caps of my own free will and thought everyone finished school at 11 lol there were many tears when I realised this wasn't so.

still waiting for my jet pack...

but everything else just blows me away when I stop to get perspective.
I mean, my car talks to me and I can give it voice commands. And she's got a kinda hot voice. It's like I AM the Hoff!

Thanks Al Gore, I really dig your keen 'interwebs'!

Heh. They don't need to criminalize thought because society has been much more successful in destroying independent thought and rebellion than Orwell had dreamed.

I sometimes think that the television may have become just too powerful to ever have a free thinking populace again. Stalin and Hitler both saw the power of the radio and used them heavily for propaganda. Hitler also made great strides in propaganda use and research. I think TV is so powerful for influencing and controlling thought, and too attractive for most people to ever stop watching it.

Cash is still king baby, and it always will be.

Not so fast. Only about 3% of all money in transactions is in "cash" The rest is all electronic. Bits of electronic data.

I can make one forcast for the future that, unless we have a global disaster of some sort, is guaranteed to come true. The future will be crowded! The demise of open space and incredible population growth is the major change I have observed in my fairly long life.

In the 50's we were being told that thanks to atomic energy, electricity would be too cheap to meter so everyone would have free electric service. Yeah...right!!!!!

As to flying cars, There was one developed in the early 50's and the inventor spent the next decade trying to find a market for it. He used to show it at state and county fairs all over the country. However, think about widely available flying cars in terms of today's ground traffic...do you really want some zonked out dude buzzing along beside you at 30,000 ft in a poorly maintained Honda aerowizzer with his music thumpin' the bass, looking for a chance to cut in front of you so that he can land at the closest McDonalds Sky Service fast food joint? lol
