Can a driving cap be worn with a trenchcoat?Or would it look ridiculous?

Yeah, even "newsboy" caps have been coupled with long coats in similar situations and era as the illustrations above. To refer to a cloth, paneled cap with a bill (not just crushers) as a "driver's cap" wouldn't be inaccurate would it? Seems I've heard/read that before somewhere.

Anyway, I've only seen that combination at antique automobile (as in turn-of-the-20th-century) shows like in the illustrations.

If going for some kind of authentic vintage reenactment vibe, I'd say this would be the era you'd be emulating.

If simply going for your own modern look made up of various classic elements, it's surprising how some people can make an eclectic combination work for them with confidence while others allow what people might think to make them overly self-conscious and therefore, somehow, the style suffers for that.

It all depends on your attitude, I'd say. To me it wouldn't be 'wrong' in any way. The alternatives are no hat (booo!), a fedora (some feel too gangster, or G-man, or formal but I like), a ball cap (NOOOO!!!)...

Surely a trenchcoat is double-breasted and belted. The coat in MK's illustration goes excellently with a cap (as does the modern slip-on single-breasted fly-fronted raincoat) but isn't a true trenchcoat.

Agreed. I t was to illustrate that a newsboy cap looked excellent with a long coat.....regardless if it was a rain coat or long top coat.
