Ok, as a bump to this interesting thread, and as this hat did see some history...
I offer this "limited edition" 1984 4X Stetson sold for and worn at the National GOP convention held in Dallas Texas, where President Ronald Regan was nominated for a second term...

The above website is the go-to for researching naval vessels. I toured a restored LST(?) here on the west coast a few years ago. It is incredible that these ships put so many miles on the open ocean, must have been an ordeal.

I served on the USS Racine LST 1191 during the 70's. Spent most of my Navy career on amphibious ships. We called it the Gator Navy. Small crews and hard work.

Yes, this is mine. I thought it was pretty cool. AND in OUR SIZE!!!! Yep, 7 1/2!!!!
Very surprising find. It will be my secret campaign hat whenever I go to vote from now on!!!

Edit: Yes I was thinking how low the odds to find one, let alone in my size considering only 1800 were made in all sizes........though upon reflection, I WOULD think families who had one would keep is as a remembrance....though I suppose you never know anymore.

Interesting hat and a great piece of history. I wonder if they still do commemorative hats? I need to start looking planning what hat I want just in case I get nominated.

Stetson No.Quality purchased from the Chestnut St. store sometime in the late 1930s - early 1940s. A hand written name underneath the sweatband inspired a search. Could it have belonged to Tuskegee Airman Armour McDaniel? The match is not perfect - McDaniel (not McDaniels) is shown as a Lt. Colonel. But he did attend Temple University in Philadelphia before the War. Perhaps the name was written by someone else at a later time? A fine hat with a good story somewhere... perhaps this one!

Here is an interesting article on Stetson Hat History that is not too badly researched at all. They DO however picture a 1930's ad (1937 to be exact) in the part about the 1940's hat production, buy hay they tried.....

This thread needs a bit of a bump.

Watching “Pawn Stars” late last night, they showed a hat owned by President F.D. Roosevelt. It was on loan to and displayed in the CIA Museum. Through a representative the owner turned down an offer to buy of $250,000.
It’s a Stetson!
