Couldn't agree more about him rockin' that hat. Also Burt Lancaster. Maybe the reason is that these guys were genuinely tough guys. These 2, like so many of those actors of that time, were or seem to be of a different breed of men.

My parents generation. My male teachers in high school were like that too. Unbelieveable in the 21st century perhaps, but true. They grew up in the great depression and fought in WWII. Their parents and teachers were raised by people who had experienced the civil war, westward expansion of the United States and the resulting indian wars. They had very different attitudes about almost everything.

Larry McMurtry wrote several other novels in the same universe as LD, and most of 'em have been turned into TV movies or limited TV series. I think there was one (Streets of Laredo?) where James Garner played Captain Call.

If you're concerned about chronology then the first prequel you want to watch is "Dead Man's Walk". Call is played by Jonny Lee Miller & McCrae is played by David Arquette. Dead Man's Walk precedes Comanche Moon.

I was just watching that with my Mom a few minutes ago wondering if any Loungers were watching and enjoying the hats. Now I know.

Just flipping through this fun and interesting thread, but I'm surprised no one has mentioned Tim Olyphant's hat from Justified.

That's a good hat but I liked his hat on Deadwood even more.
