In 1950, Hemingway, then at the top of his fame, came out with his "Across the River and into the Trees." E.B.White, in The New Yorker, responded with a piece called. "Across the Street and into the Bar," about an office worker in need of some mid-day relief. Really funny piece.

I know there are places here for old pictures

but I thought it would be cool to put pictures of hats from old NY and get a glimpse of what the city was like back when men wore hats

I gathered these pics from a lot of places

I want to start the thread with my absolute favorite pic

the wall of a pool room in 1943... look at all those wonderful creases

each one is like the signature of the man it sits on top of

Love this image. It says two things to me: first, men creased their hats any which way, with both great abandon and with great care, displaying far more variety than we modern hat wearers do; second, the constant creasing of hats (and tacks through the brims) helps underscore what happened to those millions of hats: they wore out.

I have a ton of pics ... I've been addicted to pictures of the days when men wore hats for a long time ... particularly pictures of hat wearing in NY

I grew up around the area and have always been obsessed with old NY

here are some more ... I hope you enjoy

my all time favorite is the pool room picture... but the first one of this group is another favorite .... I don't really even know why ... it just speaks to me

We were touring Ellis Island over the weekend, and I found myself studying all the hats in the photographs on display. I couldn't help but notice the ancient forerunner to Bob Robert's Bluegrass Green Campdraft with telescope crown.
