I have a modern Alessandria that I bought from Bencraft as well. Although it is a very nice hat the felt is not on par with the felt on the Film.

well that says it...the salesman you were talking to, told you the real deal....
Earlier today I checked out some pictures of the Borsalino Film...It's really a great looking hat...
BTW, how many post do I need to make before I can PM....
I'd like to PM you and ask your opinion on some hats that aren't related to this thread...

The hat in this photo here is clearly a very fine pliable felt with a cavanagh edge. I don't think you can get that look with the thicker rabbit felts found on akubra, or really most modern hats, and you certainly can't get a cavanagh edge in a modern hat.

I'm a big fan of the cav edge, and diamond bash. I find the diamond even moreso than a teardrop or C lends itself to a very nice rake. My Camp draft did take a nice diamond bash, but it's a very different look than the same crease done on a thin pliable felt. I like bound and welted edges, not really a fan of raw edges, but nothing else I've seen looks as nice as a cavanagh edge.

How do modern borsos fit in size wise anyways? True to size or a little bigger or smaller? And do they shrink like modern stetsons?

I don't find the modern Borsos to be as consistent in size (or fit) as Akubra, but the inconsistency is nothing extreme or anything to worry about.

Its a typical '42-'55 Hat Corporation of America(Dobbs,Cavanagh,Knox,Disney and some store branded like mine) of the $15-$25 class. Stetson 3X,15,20 or Sovereign w/ Mode Edge would be comparable models.
