Hats at the Restaurant

I hope this isn't off topic, but this is a problem
for the hat wearing MEN of my Church.
I am the newest among them, and I asked for permission
to purchase a tasteful wooden hat/coat rack,
to be placed unobtrusively between the Deacon's and Usher's pews
at the rear of the Church, as I've seen hats under pews,
hung on the top of the arm rests etc.
I feel placing something you're going to wear on your head on the
floor is unsanitary,
Since I was turned down for no good reason, I'm going
to try one or more of the metioned solutions.
Then I'll reconsider finding a new Church home

Yes, I agree, perhaps you should consider changing affiliation. Say, the San Francisco Atheists Society meets in a marvelous place with plenty of hat hooks: namely Schroeder's, a huge German restaurant with 1930s peasant life murals on the walls, dark wood everywhere else, huge hat hooks. It's wonderful. The SF Art Deco Society even holds events there sometimes and EVERYONE wears a hat to that ... plenty of hooks to go around. COME ON LADDIE, GIVE IT A GO.

Or just wear the damn thing. What you wear and how you wear it can in no way affect your spiritual beliefs. Perhaps then your church will get the message.

That's strange that they wouldn't allow you to donate a nice hat/coat rack for the church, especially since men are not supposed to wear hats in church (yet expected to dress nicely for church) and it's more free stuff for the church! My church already has a nice chrome coat tree in the room at the entrance and I'm probably the only person who makes good use of it lol. Anyway, I wouldn't consider changing churches, or giving up my faith especially, over a materialistic thing like a place to hang my hat (which I'm blessed to have in the first place!). Even though wearing a hat or not doesn't really affect my faith, I still never would wear it during church. It's hard to explain why, other than sheer tradition and social rules, but it's like a respect thing- like how you take your hat off during the national anthem. If you saw a man standing with a hat on without his hand over his heart during the anthem, you would think he's probably unAmerican and doesn't care- same as in church. Anyway, I ramble!

I agree, that's rather strange. One would think they would be happy to accept a hat stand or hat rack, unless there is not much space in the place to begin with.

hat racks unite.

A old chap that works part time for me, got so fed up with my putting fedoras, on hooks in the store. So he came over one day and literally put a wooden 5 peg hat rack in my front vestibule, and my wife is standing there, and he says hold this and he screwed it to the wall, unfinished. She didnt know what too say, and he said have a nice day and left. I now have my good fedora and my barn fedora and a dead straw hat and my fur mountie style hat for wicked days hung on this contraption so complain and someone may come and put up a hat rack, warning they may not finish it. 59Lark

That's kinda wierd. I'd certainly have a talk with the person/persons who turned down your offer (deacons/elders/pastor) and ask why. In and of itself, I'd say this was not a good reason for leaving a church.

I just lay mine on the seat/pew next to me and don't worry about it.

My churches have always had hat/coat racks available.

It's kinda weird to be attending Church in Frisco on a Saturday in the first place[huh]
If you took a poll, and asked my fellow San Franciscans
fifty things to do in the city on a Saturday, attending services
would probably be 250th on the list.

There is a small but influential group who've put themselves in all the positions
of power in our particular parish.
They have been reported to the conference on occasion, and if you read
between the lines when we recently had a guest Pastor from the conference
speak at our services not long ago, they are tired of their attitudes as well.
Example:
Two women, paternal sisters, have appointed themselves to the deacon board
not to help with what that office entails, but to complain about what the other deacons (the men) aren't doing around the Church, not that they do any of it either, and it was one of these sisters that I had made the request to.
Of course they are not about to do anything to accomodate or
encourage anything as masculine as men wearing hats.
I just try to ignore the cheap shots, and remember that I'm there to serve the
Lord not the CONTROL FREAKS.
I won't get into all the details of this foolishness, I've been told to
report them to our union, as well as the main Church body,
and I have a eight page letter that just needs me to push send.
But right now, I'm content pray for them, and occasionally cuss them out
under my breath...then pray for myself afterward.
Oh! and I keep dressing conservatively, but sharp, including hats which they
don't like, one of the sisters makes an atempt at wearing a man's fedora,
she doesn't know how to wear it. She's no Marlene Dietrich

This is a difficult enough city to stay on the walk,
and according to the scriptures, it's going to get harder for
some to stay in the Churches.

I'll meet you where you're at if you'll do like wise
and I'll be glad to try out the hat hooks.
And we have plenty good room in our Church for hats,
and saints alike.
Haven't been to Schroeder's in years, knockwurst is a favorite
of mine, my Dad's too.
My Father grew up in the depression, and had a buddy from Germany,
they used to trade the sandwiches their Mothers made for them
throughout elementary school, my Pop's peanutbutter and jelly
for his mustard and onion:eusa_doh:
I assume that's when and where he started eating knockwurst and sauerkraut.
do they serve during your meetings?
Sounds good right now! as long as they are all beef.

Back on track now

There's a really good restaurant here in Frisco,
uh, good food I mean, and great service.
I used to go all the time, this was before I started wearing hats.
I won't metion the name, because I really like the owner,
and the lady that works there is CUTE!
Here's the thing;
I stopped going there in 2006, I went in to grab a sandwich...
or two, while waiting, it was during the 2006 cup prelims, and
I watched England getting their hats handed to them by...
well I can't remember now, but I went home and enjoyed my
sandwiches, about a day later I was startled by a small cockroach,
and then a larger one that evening!
I'm not the best housekeeper, by anyones standard, but I had lived in
my apartment for over twenty years, and had only seen ONE cockroach,
and that was my first year there.
I used to stop by this place quite a bit and had noticed them crawling
around the place in their various stages of development,
and that's precisely why I stopped going there especially while carrying
a gym, or in my case a skate bag.
This last visit, I was wearing a raincoat, (no bag) which I kept on,
must have crawled in the pockets, or as someone suggested; the bag my
grilled chicken sandwiches were given to me in:eusa_doh:
I didn't notice if there was a coat tree in the place.
This thread got me thinking about what if I had been wearing hats
then, and hung my hat in there

It's not just a "where to place my hat" issue

It's a general "No place to put outergarments" issue. No hooks for hats generally = no hooks for coats, either. I find it especially amazing in the colder climates here in the US. What are we supposed to do with our coats or jackets, not to mention hats?

If you're wearing a jacket and are sitting in a chair I guess you could put the jacket on the back of the chair, but a coat will be too long unless you're comfortable with having people walking on it as they go by. If it's just two of you and you get a booth then you can try to fold up your coats and put them on the seat next to you, with your hat on top. If you've got a booth and it's filled with people, though, what then?

All in all I think it's rather inexcusable and very annoying that, for the most part, most dining establishments do not provide you with a place for your outergarments. I don't expect the return of the cloakroom (and I know that many would be afraid to leave their coats and hats unsupervised, anyway) but plenty of coat and hat stands would be nice!

No hooks for hats generally = no hooks for coats,

I read somewhere that this was part of the reason that men's hats became
a "bygone" Not having to worry about your "stuff" when, or wherever you went someplace,
carefree, and some other words were used in the text.
I can relate to the concept, but it seems that todays convention
translates personal comfort to mean sloppiness and dishevelment.
So far, I've only worn my fedoras to Church (don't get me started!)
and twice on recent flights out of the state, and country,
and I must admit, it hasn't been easy ie;
maintaining your cool, and keeping your hat from being sat on,
stepped on etc.
That's why I really like the creative ideas in this thread that keep
your hat safe and in view.
Reminds me of an American Playhouse from the early 80's,
where the actor Mako exhorts, when his son asks for money to buy
football cleats to make his high school team;
"You need special shoes to play a game? Make your own!"

I went out to dinner last night. They had a coat check and they gladly took my hat. I find that most nicer restaurants in Boston have coat checks. The more casual places with booths usually have hooks between the booths. I guess that is one benefit of living in a cold climate. People may not wear hats much any more, but they sure wear coats around here. And restaurants realize people need a place to put the coats - and a side effect of that is a place to put my hat.

Oh man, I so agree with the last three posts in particular!

I'm glad to hear the Boston is an exception, but here in Atlanta, unless you go to the most expensive of establishments (e.g. Nikolai's on the Roof) you won't find anyplace to check garments and very, very seldom any hooks or other provisions. People try to finagle extra seats to pile clothing onto, or drape things awkwardly on the back of their chairs. None of that should be necessary - just some hooks where your clothing would be visible and out of the way. Costs very little. Maybe they think it detracts from the decor, but I think a bunch of uncomfortable diners is much worse. :rage:

the only restaurant I have ever seen that has any accommodations for outerwear was of all places the waffle house. Its getting to where they dont even have coat hooks in the restrooms which just irks me to no end. I wear my hat in most restaurants especially after getting bbq sauce on my cap I stored in my lap.

We have an old fashioned "cafe" her in my town. It sports the bar stools at the counter type of place. On the back of each chair is the "hat clip", of the same type you used to see in Church on the pews.

I also have a vintage hat clip that was made to affix to the cloth seat of the automobile...

and it has the same type of hat clip.

I will post a picture soon.....
