Today is the 228th anniversary of the Whiskey Rebellion of 1794. Surprisingly history has not been spun to make us believe the rebellion was about temperance, rather than about unjust taxation.

Single Malt Whisky has never been defined in America like other nations around the world, more specifically Scotland. As a result of a long campaign by the American Single Malt Whiskey Commission, last Fri 07/29 the US Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau announced American Single Malt Whiskey as a standard of identity, just like KY Bourbon & TN Whiskey are. No word or movement on establishing Colorado Whiskey as a standard.

I celebrate history & the making of new history with a few drams of Balcones Texas Single Malt Whiskey & my 1930’s Stetson Nevadan. Cheers!

Today is International Beer Day for 2022. Time for a few imports Under my Gannon Highwayman in natural.

Made a tequila buy yesterday. New liquor store also has a walk-in humidor & had some Henry Clay Corona War Hawks. Flèche Azul Tequila is distilled by a long line of family Tequilamasters, now with Mark Wahlberg as their financial investor taking it nationwide in the US. Earning high ratings the Blanco was sold out.

Settled for a few pours of Siete Leguas with its strong cooked agave taste.

Good morning. I have been catching up on this thread.

Jack thanks for the interesting info on Tequilla. I have created a list on my phone notes for reference when head out t the liquior store. (My experience is very imited and the only bottle is a Jose Cuervo bottle in the back of the liquor cupboard.

The below collage shows Founders Agave, Glenlivet Caribean Reserve, Guinness Extra Stout, Founders Highball Drifter, salty lassi, Guinness Draft, Omni Lager, Surley Supreme and Founders Porter.

I did some trading for a California beer that I have desired to try for some time. TLast Sunday I made time to sample the Alesmith Speedway Stout. Truly one of the best beers I have had in a long time. This beer has a huge taste. The ABV 12% works to lighten the flavors and full body. Coffee, chocalate, roasty malt are dominate. The big plus is that it drinks clean and crisp, while being full bodied. Just excellent.

The warm week found me appreciating the Founders Agave. IMO it is a terrific warm weather sipper. The taste of Agave and grapefruit are predominant in a hazy pouring beer.

The salty lassi (yogurt, milk, cumin and salt) was just the trick with some fish curry on a warm summer late evening. I finished the meal with a Surley Supreme (pilsner).

I did try open one of the bottles of a four pack of Founders Highball Drfiter. "This barrel-aged sipper inspired by our favorite bourbon-based cocktails. The Highball Drifter presents aromatics of caramel and vanilla, dried fruit and spice while hints of cherry and bitter orange peel whisk you away to simpler days." The bourbon barrels impart a grand taste when combines with the orange peel and extract is distinct and appealing. I provided feedback on Founders site that I would be curious to have the beer without vanilla but with more cherry flavor. Admittedly I am not a big vanilla fan and found me wanting more bourbon and orange. I imagined, with my suggestions the highball taste would be highlighted.

An evening dinner of Soba Ramen accompanied by a small dram of Glenlivet Caribean Reserve was delishish. The whiskey added to the dark umami filled meal. I definately will combo this meal again.

I like the label protection and identity standard.

I like an established standard also, leaving plenty of room for experimentation in distilling within the standard. For example a couple of TX & NM distilleries are using mesquite wood to dry the barley for their malt. That’s what the craft whiskey movement should be all about, in general.

Strananhan’s Colorado Whiskey & High West are the two main distillers behind the effort to establish Colorado whiskey as a standard, & among other things it is based primarily on mountain spring water.

Yuzu Ale and a couple of palm straw hats I wore the other day that I never got around to posting.

Yuzu is a Japanese citrus fruit. This beer is part of the Ya-ho Brewery‘s “Sorry” series. They make beer that they feel inclined to make, sometimes with very strange ingredients. It says on the can 好みなんて聞いてないぜ - We didn’t ask (are not interested) what you like.
This one was really good, but the one made with katsuobushi (bonito flakes)…not so much.

So great to catch up with an old friend who now lives in Hokkaido. She’s become a great friend of Etsuko’s, too, over the years. I worked with her more than 25 years ago, and thanks to Covid, we haven’t caught up for seven or eight years.
