Wasn't sure which hatbox thread to post this in, but after reviewing the three threads I found on hatboxes, I decided this was best/most appropriate (even though this has become a vintage hatbox thread, the others seemed more specific.)
So, a custom hat should have a custom hatbox (even if crudely made). This is a couple of 36"x48" corrugated plastic sheets from Lowe's lined with some scrap black fabric (hat circle from the hat shipping box) and held together with glue (fabric)and packing tape (box). I used velcro to keep the lid closed. Works for me and keeps the hat safe until fall.
I bought a hat (that was not original to this box) and asked the auction house to keep the hat box and ship the hat in a proper shipping box. They did neither. They just covered this box in packing tape and sent it out. Maybe a good thing as it sat in the rain on my porch for a few hours. The hat is fine, but the box is not. It's one I've not seen, so it's a bit sad that it is gone.
In the "It's a Small World" department, I think or believe that Ephraim Tutt, who started this thread, is a distant cousin of mine, and that we share the same about 5th great-grandparents, that being a famous pioneer of the 1700's named Captain Samuel Stalnaker and his wife. Samuel served as Captain under George Washington in the French and Indian War, and is said to have shown Daniel Boone where the Cumberland Gap was located, allowing settlement of Kentucky, etc, etc. I recently texted Ephraim here but haven't heard back, so don't have confirmation of our relationship, but a distant cousin told me of an Ephraim Tutt some 20 or 30 years ago, if my memory of his name is correct.
I see that there was a fictional literary character by the name of Ephraim Tutt. I don't know if that factors into the equation here and was used as a front by this thread's author, but I'm hoping I haven't fallen for such a false pen name.
Picked this one up a few months ago. Sinton Hats is one that I am unfamiliar with. I like the larger boxes that’ll store multiple hats. Throws my wife off on how many I’ve actually got.
Case for a top hat or (as used by me) a bowler:
Combination of leather and imitation leather, purple silk inside (faded),
the elastic bands are worn out, otherwise OK condition, 20s/30s (?)
Such cases are quite common in German bay, but rarely this beautiful and affordable.
Stetson box that my very late 30's Stetson Number 1 Quality hat came in today. I haven't seen this Stetson box design before. Don't know if it's old enough to be the original box for that hat or not.
