You got a good deal on that hat, I'm not convinced they started life together. There is a good chance that hat might have a date stamp. Time will tell.

The box seems to be a style from around the early 40's......top is very simular to the whippet boxes of the time.....
I belive the hat is the same vintage.......do you think the hat is perhaps earlier??
I know I cannot wait to examine this time capsule......

The Royal first use is Sept. 1935. I think it was gone by mid war, but that is only theory. I am curious how you came up with the Whippit box dating?....not doubting it, just curious.

Period dated ads and the art design of the early black whippet boxes. I belive there have been some here that have had actual dates of their whippets and boxes.....though I could be wrong......I do not belive they used the black boxes with the dogs beyond the early 50's. Most of the ads seen with the dogs (and I actually own some dated examples) are from the 40's. I was noticing the lid of these is Very Simular to the box I will be getting.......was not the whippet hat introduced around 39 or so?

Looking at the hi res picture of the hat box....I am almost 100 percent certain it is the original box. The lid has the crowns (representing Royal) as well as the split image of the Stetson Logo (as represented in the original two color split logo of "The Royal Stetson"). Examine the logo of the top of the lid under the Stetson lettering and you will see what I mean. When it arrives I will take more pictures of both the hat and the box.......

M

A great piece of history there my friend!

It really is.......would have been awesome to have found a receipt but no luck.........did not find a price label on the hat either.....but the blocking labels are intact and in great shape and there are numbers and pencil markings on the sweat......none look like actual dates thought.....
Cheers,
M
May take a little while on the hat pictures.....I want to use a different camera (not the tablet camara I have been using) and that is not as convenient to post the results......but will take good clear images.

As an addition, I am sure this must be the original box as it uses the split logo....and the gold (indicating a premium product). When Stetson first introduced "the Royal Stetson" it was not a introductory leveI hat it later became. I also do find the use of the Maltese Cross interesting and would like information regarding whether Stetson has used it before or since........
Best,
M

Nothing special, but I picked up a double Knox hatbox off the bay for real cheap. Ten bucks and I'll have a homburg storage for the summer months. I'll keep both of my black Homburgs in this one. A knox and my Hardeman. Now I need a Mallory box for my brown homburg from Matt. Are octagon boxes a creature of the 50s. Dobbs and Knox ones seem to be common.
