Hat wearing has been tempered severely by new job

In my view it's part of the school's job to teach the youngsters some manners. In that light I see a "no-hats-under-roof" rule as an excellent idea. I would guess, that swimsuits, skiing gear and Mr. Pumpkin costumes are unwanted in classrooms and on stairs as well

That said, I really wonder about lockers!?! Where are you supposed to put your motorcycle helmet (and other MC-gear), and where do you put your soaking wet outerwear when it's pouring down outside? When it's freezing winter and you wear heavy, hot boots on your way to work - do you really have to wear them all day, indoor? A stationary job without a decent locker ... that's what really puzzles me [huh]

Why on earth would an administration equate a fedora worn by a grown professional with a backward ball-cap worn by a gangster-wannabe high-school student?

Side Note:

Historically the Homburg (Anglo - American term) was very similar to a Fedora (American term). Soft felt hat with similar brim curl and a center crease. It would have been the stiff felt or Top Hat people making such claims against soft felt wearers.

Good point - also, I don't believe the fedora was commonly worn by grade school children, was it? Wouldn't they have been sporting flat caps and such to annoy the top hatters?

I have seen photos of children wearing soft felt hats but caps were the norm. In Germany (probably other countries too) they had special school caps. I don't think there was any issue with children wearing caps to school in America or Europe.

This is just a modern day thing relating to gang affiliation (see baseball caps). I ran into a similar situation (all head wear ban) at a sports bar a few years ago. I told them to take a hike and went else where (tough to do if it's your job).

I'm old enough to have experienced the sour old men of my childhood and youth in the 60s and 70s - and I'm not yet old enough to have forgotten them. When was a generation ever satisfied with the generation it produced and raised? Could it be, that homo sapiens is unsuited to produce offspring - are we really so incapable of raising/education our offspring in a way, we find proper - or do we just get less spacious and more intolerant as we age? Why do every generation whine and bitch over the next? It's kind of funny, isn't it?

I'm aware of that. I just didn't recognise the issue in the post I commented as a public school issue

I don't think it's a gang-related thing. Hats were banned when I was in school 40 years ago before any of us had ever heard of gangs. It was just considered inappropriate to wear a hat in class. Period.

I certainly "know" about plumbers and their "ways"; reasons not ever to be one.
(Steam fitting/boiler op is a much better trade. One thing I discovered was that Plumbers in general know
little or nothing about steam, no matter what their telephone book ad/truck signage tries to relate.)

BTW, not to offend by my above rant, but also, could the "ph66" or PH refer to Plumbing & Heating?

DH are actually my initials. 66 references both the year I got here and my interest in Rte 66. I am, however, a certified master plumberand master gas fitter, and have medical gases certification, and a boiler operators certificate, and am certified by the dept. of labor as a craft instructor. I also have a bachelors degree in history.
As far as steam fitting being the better of the two trades, I've found that when the economy is bad and no one is building commercial buildings, there not as much extra money to be made doing residential repair work. Fewer folks have boilers in their homes as bathrooms. I also don't personnaly know any PLUMBERS who've had their faces scalded off in a boiler explosion.
that being said- I do know plenty of plumbers who, like you friend, are complete idiots. Also plenty of engineers, lawyers,doctors, bus drivers, cooks, walmart employees......etc. No offense to anyone but you get my point I hope.

I can see not wearing them in class. I don't remember them being banned on school grounds (today this might even extend to buses). I am certain people wore caps (I lived in a the sticks and there were FFofA guys with John Deere caps) and other head wear to school in my day. Also today there is a big problem with gang wear and it extends beyond schools (see my sports bar example).

I'm probably the last generation in the UK to have worn a school cap to a state school (think Just William, only grubbier ). They pretty much died out when I was at primary school (early 70's). Some Public (think private) school still have caps/hats as part of their uniform though.
