Yesterday my wife and I spend the day in New Haven with the expectation of going to Delmonico Hatters to get my Mallory cleaned and re-blocked. I took a few pictures of the store front and a close up of their sign to show everyone.

I couldn't believe the amount of people in the store. I showed my hat to the owner and he told me to leave it alone. It wouldn't come out any better that it was. The hat really is in perfect condition as is. I only wanted to have it cleaned because it was a hat I won off of e-bay.

If anyone is ever in the area it really is worth taking a trip to this store. Fortunately I only live 30 minutes away. Everyone in the store is a pleasure to deal with. While we were there a older gentleman by the name of Marcus steamed my hat to just give it a slight touch up to adjust the crown and brim.

I tried on a beautiful Borsalino Como in a medium shade of brown that I need to get. The felt is so soft on these hats. Before we left Marcus showed us a full beaver Borsalino to show us the difference in quality. Personally I didn't care too much for it because the fur was a bit too long for my taste plus it was $500.

I know you can probably buy hats cheaper on line but it is sure nice being able to walk into a hat shop and try on as many different hast as you want to find just the right style and color that best suits your features.

I once had a chance to try on some of their hats..pure hat-heaven! Couldn't buy anything unfortunately..not my wallet-size
And the dog is pretty cool aswell!

Last time I was in the store was many years ago. Already their hats
were nothing special. They don't make their own felt and what they
use isn't great. But the service and feeling of the store made
the visit worthwhile.

Hat shops

Looking through the digital photos on my computer, I found these pictures of hat shops:

Meyer the Hatter - New Orleans
I am shure the New Orleanians here can provide better pictures, but visiting Meyer and talking to Sam and Marcelle was one of many great experiences during my "American odyssey" in 2007.

Ronchi - Dubrovnik, Croatia

"Since 1858. The oldest hat manufacture in Croatia".
Mostly women's hats, but also a few men's straw and felt hats. As the note in the window says: "All items hand made". I think the men's hats were from a well known factory, but I can't recall which.
August 2008.

Petitgas - Copenhagen, Denmark

Est. 1857 as a hat factory by Parisian Francois Petitgas.
The 65 year old owner is now the only person working there, and when his back hurts too much, the shop is closed. (As it were on my last visit to Copenhagen). In an article in a Danish online magazin he recallls that when he came to Copenhagen in 1960 there were 18 hatshops in town. To day only Petitgas is left, and he intends to keep the shop for 5 more years.
(I put my money on some cheap women's clothes chain store as the next leaser).
Petitgas sells Stetson, Borsalino and the German Maiser brand. Prices are not cheap, a Beaver Borsalino goes for about 700 USD.

By the time I reached Prague, I knew I would have to purchase a replacement. Fortunately, I came across this store, near Wenceslaus Square.

Next was Vienna, and when I saw this store, located in a subway station, I was sorry I did not hold off on purchasing a hat until I got here. There appeared to be a wide price range, with hats going for $15 up to $200.

Note that in addition to the Panamas, there is also the traditional Tyrolean hat and Austrian jacket (there must be a name for this article of clothing, but I do not know it).

Despite this store, I only saw a few hats in Vienna, mostly Panamas, and I suspect they were worn by tourists like myself.
