Hat Size and Motorcycle Helmets

I just ordered a Shoei motorcycle helmet. What a dilemma, as I am caught between hat sizes of their M and L sizes. I went with the L.

Anyone experienced challenges on helmet fitting?

Getting the correct helmet size is a challenge. First off, in general Shoei helmets are generally considered a better fit for those with more or less round heads, Arai for those with long ovals. (I haven't heard much about other makers in this area.) In addition, helmet sizing can vary between styles within a single manufacturer as well as between different manufacturers.

The best way to determine whether or not it is the correct fit is, of course, to try it on. You want it to fit snugly around your head, but not so tight you'll get a headache within a little while. Remember that the helmet will give a bit over time and loosen a little. With the helmet on grab the chin piece and move the helmet side to side, up and down. You want the skin on your forehead to move with the helmet, not have the helmet slide back and forth. Next grab the helmet by the back and try to roll it forward over your head. (Chin strap in place.) If it comes off, it's too big.

I hope this helps!

Cheers,
Tom
