The officials of the road decided that the passenger was guilty of contributory negligence, and refused to supply a new hat in place of the one destroyed."

I guess it depends on the size and diet of the individual doing the sitting...

For me, the odd part isn't that a hat got sat on but I can just imagine a bunch of men standing around debating who's fault it was and if the man is entitled to a new hat. Gives new meaning to the term "street justice".

Exactly and perhaps the conductor was not exactly on a diet as well. You can't wear a flat derby and definitely not a flat tophat. He should have been wearing the collapsible type tophat and nothing would have come of it.

That takes me back to my school days. Hence we used to fibreglass the suckers...trouble was... they then weighed about 500g on top of your head in summer! lol lol
