I would think is ok as long as they don't stretch your hats.

What about using manikin head or foam sphere? Would that work for a few hats?

I personally stay away from bare foam mannequin heads as I know that the styrofoam has been known to dry out and expedite rot in latex masks, which I would imagine could do similar to the leather band on a hat.

I always switch out my hats by seasons. Autumn/Winter has more felt hats than Spring/Summer, which typically has more straw than felt. I keep the ones in the off season in their boxes to keep the dust off of them.
