My wife and I went to a friends for Thanksgiving. Her house was built in the Mid to late 40's. I opened the closet to hang our coats and shelter my hat when lo and behold, on the wall are two hoop hat holders. They appear to be made out of cellulose or similar flexible materiel. Is there anything comparable being made today or as tortswon suggested.........how about some clothesline? Is there a formal name for the devise?

You should've taken a picture for us. [huh]
Ditto!

It seems like most people have a camera phone on them these days. I don't but when I ask for one there are usually several present.

How on Earth did you recognize it for what it was? I'd just have looked at it and wondered what it was and perhaps used the chance to hang my hat on it, but I would have never figured out that it was actually meant for the purpose...

My coat closet is a little tight on space, and with kids I would worry about my hat getting smashed. This might be a great idea to try in my actual clothes closet though - a walk-in with a whole wall free. I don't think that it would be too difficult to reproduce with a little latex tubing.

The loops or hoops or whatever you wish to call them are a bit flexible and cradle and conform to the hat shape without pinching and misshaping the crown. Whatever the plastic material used is it just has the perfect quality. As for how I figured out what they were, when you opened the door and looked up they told you what they were for, I don't know how else to describe it.

Has anyone seen a modern version?

Man alive, now THERE's a product that an energetic, enterprising person could market for today's growing hat connoisseurs. You could have 2, 3, 4 -hat models. They'd cost pennies to produce, but would fetch a decent return, I imagine. I bet the fedora lounge store would carry them proudly.

I showed the pic to my 90 year old uncle, who knows his way around vintage properties (and hats!), and he was stumped.

Thanks WW...I was wondering too. I never would've figured that one out.
Looks like the unbent clothes hanger I keep around to snake out my garage sink.
