if someone wants to keep their hat on in church then they might have more life decision issues than hat etiquette

Indeed! My feelings are based on a sense of the history and tradition of hat wearing that I try to embrace on a personal level. Alas, I am a lone bastion of etiquette in a sea of Millennials on a college campus. Leave your hat on as you please!

looks like some sort of auction or other type of event being held in a church ... sure doesn't look like a mass to me.. and that doesn't look like a priest or pastor on stage

at least not the type of mass I am used to seeing ... but I haven't been to a mass in probably 25 years so ...

Etiquette is and has always been about fitting in to norms. If you go into a church where they keep hats on then you keep your hat on.

You HAVE to get out of there from time to time, Moon. Even folks from the entire tri-state, greater metropolitan area (or whatever label you give it) can suffer their own form of provincialism!

I've been all over plenty ... I travel for a living ... never seen anything like that cowboy church stuff though ...don't plan on seeing any more of it either

We had dinner in the Stockyards this last weekend and there must have been 10 or more people (men and women) wearing western hats in the restaurant.

Most don't take them off.

I don't know... I'm not the religious kind of guy to go every week to a mass.
I'd move there for other kind of reason, not "religious".
