This one is already on the list. I have a handful of Twenties but this one has about the softest and lightweight felt. I picked it up a couple of years ago for practically nothing so it was money well spent. I suspect it may have had a liner at one time but I don't know for sure. Not sure of the age but I was thinking early 40s. This is the only Dobbs I own with this type of size tag.
Block 5616, Depth 5 1/2 should be new to the list. I can barely make out the Block Number and the Depth is too worn away to read. I measured the Depth at 5 1/2". The hat has a 2" brim with a raw edge, 2 1/8" grosgrain ribbon with back bow. The liner has a cellophane cover. One of my favorite back bows.
This Block Number is already on the list. This is an old hat I've had for sometime, kind of a beater but a fair shade better than when I got it. The main reason I posted it is because the other Dunlap Twenty Custom Edge I posted (Page 11, Post 102 of this thread) had the same number which also had a short brim only with an underwelt where as this one has a 2" overwelted brim. From what Brad said, the other hat was a 50s era Dunlap where the brim had likely been cut down and welted since a "Custom Edge" was supposed to be like a Cavanagh Edge. Now since this is the second Dunlap Custom Edge with a short welted brim I'm thinking that the Custom Edge designation used by Dunlap may not have been a Cavanagh Edge and that the brims on both hats were originally made that way and were not cut down and welted! Of course this is just speculation on my part. This hat is more like a Trilby which would normally have a shorter brim. Not sure of the age of this one. I wasn't able to find a Union Sticker. Let me know what you think Brad.
I honestly don't know what to think about the Dunlap Custom Edges. Two physical specimens with welted edges (though one's over and one's under) seem to suggest that a Custom Edge is a welted edge. It doesn't make sense to me that a company would use the same trademark for two different styles of edges, however, so I can't explain it. Another odd thing is that 20 bucks gets you a Knox, Dobbs, or Cavanagh with a felted Cavanagh Edge, but only a welted edge with Dunlap, a mid-tier brand? There aren't too many Dunlap ads to cross reference, but in one from 1940 that I ran across, a Dunlap with a Custom Edge was a felted edge. 1950s may be a different story.
You mentioned looking for a Union label above. Even though the Union was back in the HCA factory by 1946, I have not seen a post-1909 Union label except on 1960s HCA hats. On those, the Union label is printed on the backside of the gold size tag attached to the sweatband, and never anything on the felt.
