You know there had to be drawings on how achieve the correct curves need to make a block.
I know there individuals that do make new blocks.
Would be interesting to see the process.

Josh,

I have a black Dobbs TWENTY with a 5064 block. However, it does not state the blocking height. It sits pretty tall on my head; it came open crown, seems as if it were 5 3/4". Do you know if there was a particular year or decade that they didn't mark this? Brad, care to answer this one?

All of my examples of that style label without the block height are from the 1960s, and from mid-decade or so. I have one Dobbs Twenty-Five I believe to be from right around 1960, and it still has the block height. My 1950s hats all have the block height.

So, it looks like at some point after 1960 they dropped the block height from the label. We can only speculate as to why.

According to my research 5064 came in 3 heights, 5 1/2, 5 5/8, and 5 3/4. Like Brad said, this reorder tag is from the 60's. The proportions of the hat seem to date the hat to an earlier time, possibly 40's or early 50's, but the tag says otherwise. I was even thinking this could have been a factory refurb and Hat Corp of America just used a new style tag and printed the old block number and duplicate number. Another possibility is that even though by the early 60's crowns and brims had gotten short, I'm sure Hat Corp of America still did small custom orders. Maybe a store ordered these hats with older proportions for the more conservative men who preferred the older styles to the new stingy brimmed styles. There's no way to be certain, but one thing is for sure, this hat is very interesting.
