I bought a (fairly cheap) horsehair hat brush. Can this double as a garment/clothing brush? It seems a bit soft for doing such, or am I just not enough used to using a clothes brush?

There's no harm in doing that to either brush or fabric.

I find the reverse procedure to be even more practical- use clothing brushes for garments as well as for hats. The generous size of clothing brushes helps to freshen up newly bought vintage felt hats that are really dusty from years of storage.

Maybe I need to look at videos of people using such brushes. I brushed at my black trousers for quite some time, and it didn't seem be able to catch the lint and cat hair on it very well. (I had to resort to the sticky tape roller, which I'd like to find a (permanent) replacement for.)

There is no special procedure for brushing except that you brush downward, and repeatedly.

The electrostatic charge of cat hair or any other pet's hair, for that matter, makes it impossible to remove the hair other than by using the sticky tape.

I have no pets, so brushes are all I need in a regular basis. When I receive a vintage garment with cat or dog hair on it, I use parcel packing tape wrapped around my hand to mimick a sticky tape roller. It costs next to nothing and works even better than the roller. There is no other remedy for pets hair; not even washing or dry cleaning will remove it from the garment.

bombin, the brass bristles are softer than you would expect. They work pretty well with everything, you will learn to alter directions with the brush and to keep it light.
