I wanted something to snazz up my favorite straw hat this summer and I came up with this. It works for me. What do you think?

I have an idea to create something different.

I'm tired of the boring out-of-the-box hat pins most people wear on their hats.

They're cheap, they're plastic, they're mass produced, many contain corporate logos and *worst of all* they're dull!

I've been fooling around with some out-of-the-box ideas to adorn, embellish, personalize and beautify my hats using a variety of vintage items including coins, old jewelry, real buttons, cocktail picks and swizzle sticks. The idea here is class and taste as opposed to cheap junk.

I've been talking to a local hat store about doing a counter display for the store, but I wanted to throw some of my ideas up to all you true hat lovers for your ideas, criticism and feedback.

Let me know what you think.

I have a lapel pin that I really like, but I've only worn a suit jacket/Blazer four times in the past four years (2 funerals & 2 weddings), so they don't get used. I was wondering, is there a way to turn a lapel pin into a hat ribbon pin? I can't imagine the pin and backer would be all that comfortable. How would I attach it?

Thanks for any suggestions!

I like your ideas! I also like the idea of taking something unique or of special personal meaning and making a hat pin out of it.

I have a couple of Indian-head pennies from years significant to me that I want to use as hatband pins on brown ribbons just as you have done. How did you attach the pennies to the ribbons, please?

I don't wear pins in my hats, so if there are pins in the hats I buy, I just remove them. This lot was a recent find however and just an interesting little something. The shield is 1,5cm wide and the pin 3cm long in total.

I actually was bidding on a couple of these a while back on Ebay. I think they are cool. The pin length is a little long, I trim them down (my Mercedes pins) so they ride nicer in the bow.

How do you attach one to your hat? Does the pin pierce the ribbon/bow or do you slip it in behind the ribbon? Please post a picture if you can.

Those are quite unusual for hat pins, gennerally the pin is shorter and runs width wise......
What is the length of those, are you sure they are not tie or lapel pins?
Really cool in any event!

I usually push the pin through the back of the bow knot. Lapel stick pins are longer (about 1 1/2") to stay stable in the material of a suit. I clip them off at about 3/4" so they just slide into the bow material far enough to hold. I don't have any images of this process, I should take some... I have kept a few of the long pins intact and slide them diagonally through the back of the bow and put a keeper on the end. The Mercedes 500,000 KM pin is mounted this way.
