Breakfast waitresses

I always over-tip breakfast waitresses... sometimes up to 50%!

Why should a bartender who just opens a bottle of beer get a buck per bottlecap, when a diner waitress who's tending a dozen tables, refilling coffee cups, water glasses, adding to orders, keeping your substitutions straight with the kitchen, and generally performing super-human feats of endurance with rude, hungry customers only gets a couple of bucks because it's "15%" of the order total?

No-one becomes a breakfast waitress because they love it.

Over-tip your breakfast waitress!!! ;)

I like the ones that add a tip in for themselves on top of what you put, or add a tip to the cash tip you left on the table.

I went out for breakfast, left 2 and change on the table (it was just me for an 8$ bill) and the establishment charged my debit 12 and change, so that server got like a $7 tip. Got to watch out for those kinds too.

I was always taught 15% standard, 20% for good service, and have been known to go to 25% in exceptional cases.

The entire concept of the "gratuity" was never for it to be considered as part of income, it was intended as a "thank-you" for exceptional service.

And then there's how they're taxed... GRRRRRR!:rage:

You need to go back to the establishment with your credit card bill and ask them to refund the 12% or return your gratuity (which was more than 25%).

If they refuse, vote with your feet and never darken their door again. Tell all your friends as well.

It coasts a lot more money to entice a new customer than it does to retain the ones you satisfy.

I went because I saw it (I notoriously have no clue where anything is at when I move somewhere) and called about it, AFTER I called my bank and alerted them it wasn't right.

The restaurant owner was nice, and remembered me (he was the cook and gave me a hard time for a)wearing heels b) for tipping that much and ruining the staff and c)I have got to be one of the few single women in town that goes out by themselves and everyone over the age of 50 teases me) and apologized then refunded the entire amount back to my card and told me to come back in and he'd feed me free . I can't fault his handling of it, and to be honest, he was pne of the nicest about it. Just has happened more times then I care to admit, and it is something you do need to watch out for, sad to say.

I'm glad you went back and that the qwner handled this situation so well. Congratulations. :)

That's stealing, plain and simple. I work in a cafe/restaurant, and I would never even think about putting more on a credit card for a tip than what the person left me, even if I got nothing, which has happened! (and the service wasn't awful either)

Oh I agree, and when I worked I never thought about it either.

Now, they address this in most company policies: it's grounds for termination since it's a problem across the board, or what I was told at my last waiting tables gig.
