Day-o, day-o
Daylight come and me wan' go home
Day, me say day, me say day, me say day
Me say day, me say day-o
Daylight come and me wan' go home !

Come, Mister tally man, tally me banana
Daylight come and me wan' go home
Come, Mister tally man, tally me banana
Daylight come and me wan' go home

I own an original RCA 45 of Belafonte's "The Banana Boat Song"!

This is a song from the point of view of dock workers working the night shift loading bananas onto ships. Daylight has come, the shift is over and they want their work to be counted up so that they can go home (this is the meaning of the lyric "Come, Mr. Tally Man, tally me banana/ Daylight come and we wanna go home.")

That clip is great. Belafonte even quotes the spoof that Stan Freberg did of "Banana Boat".:eusa_clap

Belafonte & the Muppets created a love of a calypso sound in my head, about 15 years before I knew what calypso was. Now my kids love the Muppet take on the Banana Boat Song. His calypso album is still one of my most popular choices to listen to when lounging in the pool during the summer months.
