Well, I'll be darned! I have a classic full brim aluminum hard hat on the corner of my desk that I've been using so long to hold change that I only now re-discovered it for what it really is--a piece of personal protective gear.

We were breaking ground on a new plant for a company I worked for years ago. I was in charge of Human Resources, and I wanted to make a visible statement to all concerning our safety-first position, so, along with the photogenic chrome spades the execs would use to break the turf, I also ordered each of us a hard hat.

I got the fanciest ones I could find with a super high luster finish, an enamel green safety cross on the front, and a pith-helmet-style adjustable sweatband/harness made out of real leather. Sombitch is even fully lined with something that looks like satin. Think General George S. Patton going construction, and you get the picture!

I only wore it that one occasion before it took it's place upside down as a recepticle for nickels, dimes, and quarters. Maybe I'll go out somewhere in it. Perhaps to church this Sunday. I'm sure I'd be welcome, so long as I leave all the change inside!

construction hats from the 40s

I found this picture going through my Dad's stuff after his death last year.

I am a commercial construction superintendent who is the responsible GIC for safety. I work for a small company on mid size projects. I use my judgment when hard hats are required depending on the amount of workers and type of activities are going on.

I think metal hard hats are phased out...

I do various work on construction sites, including underground and surface mining activity, highway and bridge construction, etc. Metal hard hats are not allowed anywhere that I've worked in the last 10 years because they conduct electricity. I have a couple of the old metal ones, including one from the Arizona Forestry Department. The US Forest Service does not allow metal hard hats on the fire line.

It is looking like I am going to have to wear a hard hat on my job. Does anyone know of a more 'fedora' style avaliable?

Thirteen years might be a bit too long to wait for advice, but your thread is quite fortuitous. I too, must sport safety wear in the works area of the warehouse. Unlike RBH, and my apologies for not picking up on this thread or RBH's request, I do have a fedora hard hat:

In addition, I must wear a hi-viz vest and safety shoes. There's no rule about uniform, as to whether it's compulsory or not, so I wear any one of the Aloha shirts that Tina made.

Today, and the rest of this week, I have booked off as annual leave. However, I needed to call into work, just briefly. Once my business there was done, I stopped by the general office to leave them a card and a large box of Christmas chocolates. My felt fedora was noticed but the real laugh came from my SJC shoes.

"What are those?" a young lady from customer services asked. "The new safety footwear," I told her. She believed me, seriously. I know because she reached down and tapped the toe cap to see if it was hard enough to have a metal insert. Relieved perhaps, that I might be telling a tall tale, she smiled and complimented me. "The hat and the shoes are fabulous," she said, "how I would love to see my boyfriend in such a way." Doffing the hat, I wished her, and the rest of the office staff, a Merry Christmas. They all loved it.

The new OSHA hardhats are more like bycycle helmets with chin straps. OSHA has determined it's not the initial hit that causes head injuries, it's the subsequent blows when the old style hardhat is no longer on the head that causes injury. Any job or jobsite requiring hearing protection will require noise cancelling protection. The foam ear plugs will no longer be acceptable. New reflective shirts will replace shell vests. These are requirements on projects receiving any federal funds, private or state.
