Thanksgiving 1948

I just had a violent flash of nostalgia looking at this picture. I know I've posted it before, but I hope some of you will enjoy it anyway. Hollis, Queens, NY, 1948. I'm the little tyke in the middle, holding onto my parents. All the men in suits. I still have the little blue knit suit I'm wearing (I've posted that before, too). Here's hoping you all have memories of tomorrow you can look back on fondly in another 60 years.

It's that time of the year again...

With the global economy still down and the holiday season a time of the year that's all too tempting for folks to get depressed and irritable, it helps to keep a sense of humor.

Stay of good cheer, keep your chin up and remember where your pumpkin pie came from...

Well, this seems like as good a place as any to ask about Thanksgiving, as it comes around for another year....

Where does it fall into the general pattern - do you tend to have also the traditional Harvest services that taken place in this part of the world, or has Thanksgiving replaced that?

No. Family members who like each other so much they never get together at any other time stuff themselves with food that's so good they never fix it on any other occasion. Then they watch football and get ready to buy Christmas gifts that will be returned around New Year's.

Happy T-day!

or V-day, if like us, you'll be celebrating sans meat.

Actually I'll be making the desert (Tiramisu) and there is a ban on watching football at our place. so, *poof!* there goes my man card!lol

had my first of several Thanksgiving dinners yesterday. Made pumpkin crunch. Yum.
I shall probably gain 15 lbs. by Jan. but after this last year. Who cares?
Enjoy it.
Diet for me if you don't agree. :D
Cannot believe it is that time of year. Just got back from a Junior League Christmas Holiday Market.
I adore this time of year. :eusa_clap

Sounds more like Christmas than Harvest, then... lol

Times I feel we'd all be better off if we evolved beyond this nonsense of valuing blood family no matter how awful over people who have earned our love and respect (which, of course, includes some, not all, blood family....).

Speaking for myself, I try to keep Thanksgiving as a stand-alone event, focusing on retaining some portion of its original intent, which was to corporately, either as a nation, or (nowadays) as a family, thank God for His blessings, deliverances, and providences. I think the Scriptural example of a feast suits the intent well.

I have wonderful memories of gathering every year with my aunt and uncle and cousins, romping, running around, playing, and eating for about three days straight. My times with those loved ones - Thanksgiving and Christmas and summer vacations- are precious to me. As we grew up, married, started families, and moved away, those that remained continued the traditions.

Now I enter with my family into a new phase of keeping Thanksgiving: with both my folks gone, and my wife's mother gone and her dad on the other side of the continent, we expand our family to include other families that don't have parents or brothers and sisters. We plan on having twenty-one in our home and loving them and every minute of visiting, feasting, joking and making wonderful memories.

Happy Thank God for Ducks Day!!!

I know I am now confusing you...

33 years ago, some of my closest friends were all working in casinos in Lake Tahoe, and didn't have the day off. So they had their feast the next day, but there wasn't a turkey to be had. however there were ducks! And thus...

So we have had this duck feast every year since on the day after Thanksgiving. It might be the only time all year we see some of each other (pardon the grammar) but we are all old and close friends. And that's what the holidays should be about, getting together with those you love.

It rotates between different people's houses, and sometime restaurants, but the main ingredients are always duck and champagne, lots and lots of champagne...

Happy Thanksgiving.

I had my favourite and most memorable Thanksgiving last year in San Francisco. I so wish I was doing it all over again-and-again-and-again. Happy Thanksgiving to you ALL. :)

actually me and the missus co-perma-banned it; her stepdad is coming over this year, he's the only one in our circles who'd have an interest anyway. We just had to say 'no';)

The last time I watched a football game Johnny Unitas had just retired!

From a Brit who doesn't really understand 'Thanksgiving' (other than through the medium if 'Friends' and Dr Quinn Medicine woman' it all looks like a good dry run for Christmas!
Enjoy! Hope you all have fun.
