My mom had one dress as a girl in the 40's- it was made from her grandmother's curtains. 
Poor mom. But even in the early 80's my mom had one dress, 2 pair of pants and 3 blouses. We were pretty poor, and she made everything that we had, or else there would have been no clothes. It was cheeper to make things, even in the 80's. So many of the textile mills are closing
