My brother moved overseas this summer, and I've taken to writing him regular letters to communicate what's new in my life. He's told me via email (!!!) that it's meant a lot to him to receive written correspondence. Now if only he would write me back!

Letters can be pretty magical.

I still write letters in cursive with a fountain pen. I hate that cursive is not taught in most schools anymore. I have legible handwriting but my kids swear they cannot read it.

Is that because they can't "read" cursive? I was raised writing in cursive, but have noticed that now that it is rarely used, I sometimes have to pause to "reset" my brain so that I can read it.

An only, very marginally, related thought: did you ever notice in old movies ('30s - '50s) how absolutely gorgeous the cursive handwriting (when they show a letter or even just an informal note supposedly written by one of the characters)?

Of course, they had professionals write it so that it was legible and stylish, but regardless, it is just beautiful to see. Every time this happens (and if you are aware of it, you'll notice how often it happens in movies from that time period), my girlfriend and I joke that if you didn't know they used professionals, you'd think having gorgeous handwriting was a requirement for an actor.

This coming Friday, May 8th, is victory in Europe day, the 70th anniversary. to that end, my wife and I, together with friends are attending a celebration, street party style, as they did at the end of the war, at a rather good hotel. This morning I received confirmation of our tickets, it was handwritten, on one of the hotel's compliment slips. Handwritten, and on a: "with compliments," slip. Doesn't get any better. Are the "With Compliments," still used? Or do I not see them now because I am retired?

My grandmother (she's 89) and I still write handwritten letters to each other. I love getting them in the mail. So much better than an email!
