Death by snu-snu!

My friend went as a pin-up nurse a few years ago... because she actually IS a nurse. :p

Last year I was La Esmeralda from Hunchback (the book). And this year I'm apparently going to be from a video game... My friends and I are trying to plan out what to be, but I keep changing my mind!

And I wanted the leg avenue Alice costume, but I had to wear the Dorothy one for a haunted house like... two years ago and I don't like... being so revealing! lol

Haha! Death by snu-snu indeed! I'm glad someone knows what i'm talking about! I hope it works out!! I just don't know how i feel about a fun fur bikini...my man has a great bod so he can wear a fun fur speedo!

If we celebrated Halloween here, I would be rockin' that Clockwork Orange look too! I'm not a fan of those porn outfits that seem to be so popular in the States.. I would much rather dress up in a big animal suit or something.

I'm not a fan of them either (however I do think the ones posted above are cute for a themed party), and honestly you don't see those costumes being walked around in unless you happen to be near or at a big Halloween party where there's a lot of horny college kids. I've never seen anybody wearing them trick or treating , or taking their kids/family out. So that's a relief. Believe it or not, I've only once seen a young woman wearing a Wonder Woman outfit at the grocery store on Halloween night and I noticed she kept her eyes down almost the whole time she was in line. I guess she felt a little out of place. The man behind her kept trying to chat her up.

Yup, me too. I'll use it as an excuse for a big poufy dress, but I don't dig the sleezy look. Seems you can't get away from it here at Halloween- people wear them everywhere! Just cut the skirt slightly below your butt, add corset or revealing top, and various accessories, and it's an angel! No, a cat! No, a maid!
I wish there were more authentic vintage costume parties. I'd love to see some old style Halloween costumes and activities brought back.

lol or should it be [huh] . California must be way more open than they are out here in Georgia. Well, actually, now that I think of it, there is one place I've seen the costumes you describe. There is a section of town here named Little 5 Points, and that area draws people from all walks of life. Every year they have a Halloween Parade, and I remember once in awhile people will come in almost nothing, and these people are IN the parade, with little kids watching. Luckily, almost everyone else is in scary, creepy, bloody costumes. But Yeah, it would also be nice to see some people come back in more traditional and home made/well-thought-out costumes. You know what I wish would make a come back? Bobbing for apples!
Talking about tradition. I've been looking at old postcards from about 1909 through 1920s. Does anybody know the old beliefs Halloween held? Particularly, all witches are dressed in red robes and a red hat. Also, there are cards with poems or sayings about looking into a mirror and seeing your future husband. So the card would depict a girl looking into a mirror and in the reflection would be a young man standing behind her

Last year I was at a bar before Halloween. There was a girl in a bra and panties with a garter belt and feather boa but then was wearing a gold top hat, like the kind you would wear at a New Year's party, i couldn't exactly tell what she was, so i just assumed she was New Years Eve. I was dressed in a tank top and jeans (pre vintage insprired days ;)) and guys kept asking me what i was, all i said was "your worst nightmare" with a lame wink and they got the hint. lol

I just thought Halloween was about scaring people and having inventive costumes. I've seen people go as Tetris, i've seen a good Lucille Ball, a great Sweeny Todd, but i've also seen my share of ladies who feel that the more you show the hotter you are.

I'm the one who covers up when i go out, and i've never had trouble finding a dancing partner. ;)

Yep, I'm tired of spending hours or days working on a costume only to lose every Halloween contest to the girl in the slutty bunny/kitty/maid/devil outfit. *yawn* Can we be a little more creative here?

I LOVE Halloween, and I agree, being a plus size diva, theres no way I could wear those teenie tiny slutty outfits. I prefer something unique or with class.

I liked that zombie prostitute idea someone mentioned lol

Last year I went as a creepy old witch, I was strapped for cash.

This year, I'm not sure. Maybe something pin-upish or something retro.

For realz. Aka: That's nice that you spent 4 hours ruching all your self trim on your dress that contains 14 yards of fabric, but this gal looks hotter, so she gets the prize! lol

I think a honey bee would be cute. You don't see many of those anymore and you'll get many more compliments on that outfit than the witch I'm sure.
Off topic, which book did you buy? I don't know of any belly dance books that can properly teach you belly dance.

This:

I don't think it's probably the greatest book ever put to paper but it has a lot of fairly clear photos and its very beginner (no beginners more beginner than I exist) and it was under seven dollars at Barnes and Noble.

ohhhh noooooo! Not Dolphina! lol lol lol
Viola, if you want to check www.bhuz.com, you'll learn a million times more information there than you will through Dolphina's book. There's no "online instruction' but the website is bubbling over with professional dancers there to answer any questions or point you in the right direction. They also do have links for online instruction, be warned though, that site is just as addictive as the Fedora Lounge.

Shirin, if I clean out my inbox will you and pretty much anybody else who knows anything about belly dance PM me? I think I've made it PRETTY CLEAR how much of a newbie I am on that score and I would appreciate any and all tips/hints. Wandering over to bhuz now to look around.

Hmm, bhuz? Maybe I should go as a bee belly dancer! lol

I'd like to be a Nurse this year - I can never find the right sort of white dress though... I'm sure I had another costume idea but I can't remember it for the life of me. xx

I bought a nurse's uniform on ebay about 2 months ago. It was used in a play set in the 1940's. It does fall about 2 inches above my knee (I stand 5' 7"). I wear a vintage 14. If you're interested in it, let me know.

This is me last Halloween. The dress was $1.00. My hair was past my shoulders and I managed to stuff it all under this tiny wig! By the end of the night I snatched the wig off 'cause my head was so hot!!lol
