We're wearing costumes to work today, so I tried a whole vintage outfit. Alas, I'm less than pleased. Things don't look the way I thought they would...
2010-10-29072458.jpg

Jacket - Ebay
Shirt - a white blouse I had. The one I bought with a better collar didn't fit over the chest, alas
Skirt - Woman Within. I didn't realize it was so long. grrrrrr.
socks - Sock Dreams, a thigh high pair of nice warm brown ones, held up not by the girdle that turned out to be too big, but by the bike shorts I have over them. I love Sock Dreams.
shoes - the brown and cream saddle shoes from muffys.com. Love these!
earrings & brooch - local vintage jewelry dealer, Sarah Coventry set of painted metal. They're clips, but my ears are itching...
hat - ebay
slip you can't see - amazon.com

The jacket is not as tailored as the photo looked, I think it's too boxy. I love the color, though, do you think it would be worth having altered?
also, I just have to say... it was 47 degrees when I went to the bus stop this morning. With a slip, a skirt, AND these socks, I was almost too warm. I had to take off my raincoat before I got to work. I wasn't expecting a skirt to be a warm outfit.

Oh, lipstick is Electra by Nyx and fake eyelashes by Ardell.

My kids got to dress up twice today. Once in a church appropriate fashion, and then with what they really wanted to be lol.
The 17 year old was two sorts of pirates, for church she was a more formal pirate, then she was more of a fighter able pirate for the party she went to with her friends. Dont have the second pic of her yet, will have to get it from her when she comes home tomorrow.
The 11 yo was Mother Nature for church, and then an evil/dark/tainted fairy for trick or treating.
Me, I was inspired by Tim Burton. I dont know what I was. My friend said Mrs BeetleJuice...I was thinking dark candy striper...lol

Inky that is an awesome costume!!! Far far better then the Rosie costume I saw last weekend, she had on a half shirt tied under her boobs and hip huggers on!!! I wanted to go up to the gal and instruct her on how wrong her costume was but I restrained myself. You are far more classy a couple then what I saw!

I also LOVE dressing up and look forward to Halloween every year. Favorite costumes include a homemade flapper outfit, Cruella de Vil, a flamenco dancer, and this year -- Betty Draper!

I was willing to put work into this outfit but I got lucky and didn't have to -- good thing because sewing is VERY time consuming for me; I don't know how!

I found the dress at Goodwill -- it's a little long for the 60s and the fabric's bandana pattern isn't right, but at least it was sleeveless, collared, button-up with a full skirt. I was looking at dresses on ebay and etsy for $50-$70, so I was very happy when I found this one for $4!

I also found the purse and skinny belt at Goodwill. The button earrings are from a vintage store I discovered on Halloween, and the gloves are from an estate sale. I spotted the sunglasses for a buck at Walmart; they looked in-period to me, but I'm not sure if they're exactly right.

I wore white heels and packed a tube of bright lipstick and a pearl-encrusted cigarette case -- a Mardi Gras ball favor I found in a vanity I inherited from my aunt.

My husband wore a skinny tie from Express and a black fedora from Panador Hats.

Thanks for reading -- I'm sure some of you will appreciate the effort I made to dress appropriately. It was fun!! At our Halloween party, a friend recognized my love for vintage and later gave me some of her relative's 50s suits she had been saving. :D

Last year I was working all day and too exhausted to bother with anything, so because I was wearing my usual work outfit of jeans and a tshirt and my mom's old florist apron, I just said I was her for the day. I do have an idea I would LOVE to try one day with my husband though. We would be Marilyn Monroe and Charles Manson, because each suits our personal style and then we could be "Marilyn Manson" together XD! Too bad we no longer attend the local goth night!

Hallowe'en Costumes

Hello Ladies!

Will you be celebrating Hallowe'en? If so, how will you be dressing? Do you like to bring a little vintage to your costume. I do, mostly because I cant afford to buy something I won't wear subsequently... In fact, I have some very ambitious plans for a Hallowe'en costume right now, but I would love to hear what you will all be doing!

We were going to celebrate but our party was canceled. At any rate I made a costume that looks like the USO girls form the Captain America movie.

Halloween is a big event for my family. My husband and I will have a private dinner (pumpkin cassarole cooked in the pumpkin= yum) and pumpkin pie. We have special china and linens for Halloween that we use as well. We probably won't dress up (except for my witch hat), but I do make a costume for the cat(s). This year our cat (now an only cat), will be Toothless from the movie "How to Train your Dragon."

We then will hand out candy to the neighborhood trick or treaters. I always overbuy candy and make the children take a big handful. If their handfuls are not big enough, I put a big handful in their basket.

I haven't thought about a vintage inspired costume.

Hallowe'en isn't really a big deal here, but I am going to an event next weekend with a Hawaiian theme. I have made a reasonably 50s-style dress in a modern Hawaiian-type print, and will wear it with saddle shoes and a flower in my hair. I think it will have some vintage flair as well as being party-appropriate :)

PS Sheeplady I love that you put your cat in costume!! How does the cat feel about it? ;)

Eh, he lets me put him in it. ;) I make the costumes, so he will have already gone through several hours of fitting, pinning, etc. before the Big Day. I use modeling wire too, so sometimes I am wiring things that hang off of him- and he is an angel. He thinks it's attention as long as he gets lots of pets out of it. Once they are on, and he realizes that they are not coming off, then he looks grumpy. (They only stay on for the family pictures.)

He's a black cat, and has been a grumpy Hershey's Kiss (2010), very grumpy Spider (2009), and a sort of happy jester (2008). His adopted orange brother (who passed away in the spring) was a grumpy Candy Corn, grumpy Pumpkin, and grumpy jester those same years. I always tried to make them match theme and be the appropriate colors! lol

Your cat costumes sound adorable! Please can we see some pictures.

I'm going as a zombie Carmen Miranda to my friends 40th birthday/halloween bash. The theme is retro zombie.

I pretty much have all the items for the costume at home anyway. I'm just waiting for a plastic pineapple and some feathers to arrive from ebay to finish off my turban!
