The picture reminds me of Tom Landry. He is the last NFL coach that I recall seeing dressed like a gentleman on the sidelines.

Homer Simpson owns Tom Landry's hat now ...

The coaches are under contractual obligation to wear team sports apparel. The NFL has its fingers in every pie. A few years ago Mike Nolan had to get special permission to wear a suit for a game as head coach.

On a separate note, I hope the Pack go down in flames (sorry). lol

My fiancee's kids, all life-long Jet fans, would rather the Bears win because the Packers have been on such a roll, and will be tougher to defeat in the Super Bowl. I guess we'll see.

Bear-Packer game in the early 60s at Wrigley Field. It was late in a tight game and the Bears have a call go against them. Halas reaches into his pocket and pulls out a handful of coins which he throws at the feet of the ref yelling, "I don't know how much they paid you but this is for the next call going our way." The ref turned and walked away, ignoring Halas.

After the game reporters asked Lombardi what he thought of the indecent. He said,"Coach Halas can do no wrong in my book. I wouldn't be here talking to you if it weren't for Coach, because there would be no professional football."

And BTW, it's a travesty that the Super Bowl trophy is not named for Halas; and Lombardi would agree as he worshiped Halas

I'd have to agree with you on that last bit but am afraid Halas has slipped from a lot of folks mind these days. We tend to ignore history, even re-write it to suit the financial entities in charge these days. I think both those men were relevant in the last days when "pro football" was somewhat more of a sport. When they left the pinstripes took over and it's been a "bidness" ever since:)

I remember that episode of The Simpsons well, when he was working for Mr. Scorpio.

I really want to see the Pack win this game. Not only because I bleed green and gold, but because my recent ex is a Bears fan........ it would be a double victory for this old soul. Green Bay has been the only way to go my entire life, I still remember watching Super Bowl 31 as a little guy. Practically the only Packer game I've ever watched where we had a victory. I want to watch this one badly, but they always lose when I watch and I cannot take that risk. Personally, this game's more important to me than the Super Bowl.

The picture reminds me of Tom Landry. He is the last NFL coach that I recall seeing dressed like a gentleman on the sidelines. Ok, sorry to make any hint of that Dallas team. It is a neat photo though. I think when the teams wear the old retro uniforms the coaches should wear a suit.

The coaches are not allowed to wear suits. They are required by the NFL to wear the Reebok crap in order to support the sales of the NFL branded clothing lines.

Mike Nolan and Jack Del Rio are ready to suit up.

The San Francisco coach and his Jacksonville counterpart have the NFL's permission to wear dress suits designed by Reebok during two games this season.

You might find this outfit at your local second-hand store. 49ers head coach Mike Nolan is shedding his old sideline gear in favor of a suit.

Nolan is expected to debut his old-school outfit -- a black suit, a white shirt and a red-and-gold-striped tie -- at the 49ers' home game against Seattle on Sunday. Del Rio also will wear a suit-and-tie ensemble in Monday night's home game against the Giants.

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said the 49ers coach has permission to "test-drive" the suit at two games this season.

"Working with Reebok, they were able to come up with something that should work for him," McCarthy said.

Nolan first broached the idea shortly after he was hired by the 49ers in 2005. He believes the ensemble will project an image of authority while also honoring his father, Dick, the 49ers' coach from 1968-75, and Hall of Fame coaches such as Tom Landry and Vince Lombardi.

But the NFL couldn't immediately give permission, citing its lucrative outfitting contract with Reebok. Nolan has worn pullovers and polo shirts during his tenure, but has worked with Reebok's designers to come up with the natty ensemble he's expected to show off Sunday.

Dan Reeves is thought to be the last NFL coach to wear a suit on the sideline. Coaches have been required to wear team-issued clothing since 1993.

Del Rio is expected to wear his suit again at the Jaguars' game against Indianapolis on Dec. 10, and Nolan will suit up again at a game still to be determined.

A great linebacker to be sure. Chicago has Urlacher, another great one. And Peppers at defensive end and...........I think we'll be watching two of the best defenses in football. I'm looking forward to it. Go bears.

And later another great defense. Go Steelers.
