I go to a salon called Shear Bliss Day Spa and Salon in Durham, NC. My stylist is Shelly. She is great with vintage style, as she worked in her mom's salon when she was younger, and had to do alot of the older ladies hair, who still wanted their 40's styles. I adore her and highly recommend her if you are in the central NC area.

I really want to check out Ultra Lux! I'd love to have a proper pincurl set done.

The last time I got my hair cut, I was talking to the stylist about vintage styles and he asked if I wanted pincurls put in. Of course, I was super excited. But after 45 minutes under a dryer he just brushed it all out, fluffed it to the max and made my half-grown out bangs look all 80's. Then he put some frosted pink lipstick on me and I looked just like Delta Burke! I looked so ridiculous I just laughed. I looked like Delta Burke if she were a child prostitute! It was horrendous!

So, yes, I'd rather like to avoid situations like that.

On one hand she got points for telling me that I should get a perm first, then the cut and so I need to grow my hair another 2 months or so--this meant I didn't end up getting a cut today (or paying anything) and I appreciated that honesty. On the other hand I showed her the diagram from 1940s Hair and she wanted to see photographs of the finished hair because "nobody cuts hair that way anymore". I think that's the death knell.

Girls, as a stylst I just want to say that we really *don't* cut the "same way" anymore. And for that matter, not ONE stylist cuts the same as ANY other. Hairstyling is an art and we all do it completely different. However, a good stylist should be able to look at pictures of either diagrams or finished styles and know how it's cut.
When I went to school in 90, we had to learn all of the old school stuff... pin curls, skip waves, fingers waves, the works. They don't even teach that nowadays!

This also means that you really shouldn't go looking for a *salon*. A salon as a whole does not mean that each stylist working there does the same thing or techniques. Word of mouth is always the best referral, and yes you can call salons and see if they specialize in retro hair or have someone there who does. Even if a salon sends their staff to classes, doesn't mean each person will learn it correctly, ect. Don't be afraid to ask for some sort of portfolio of clients they have done.

Usually the only stylists who can do this sort of work are those who are really interested in it themselves. They've taken the time to research, or they just have a knack for creating great artistic dos. Feel free to take in research that you've printed out or whatever... but if they don't seem interested then they probably won't do a good job because they won't enjoy it.

There are also stylists who can get a retro look without the old school ways. Everything depends on your hair type and condition, along with their knowledge.

So, my advice is that if you have someone like the above stylist who is honest and willing to work with you, give them a chance. If it doesn't work out for you the first time, go back and tell them why so they understand. Don't become a chair hopper right away, flitting from stylist to stylist. You may never be happy that way. Esp. if it's as simple as the cut was too long /short, or the curl too tight. We don't know unless you tell us.

and i don't know if it was last weekend or next weekend, but ultralux is having a car show! i saw a bulletin on myspace about it.

I have a hairstylist I go to in my neighborhood that does a great job with vintage updos. It's not her speciality, but most of her clients are women age 60+ so she has a little experience! The other great thing about seeing her vs going to a "hip salon" in NYC is the price! So look around for a salon that caters to the older crowd, you might get lucky.

HOWEVER, if I want something funky and more creative, I go to Mudhoney in NYC. They are willing to take risks and have fun.

I have a hairstylist that I have been so happy with. She was working out of Roseville, MI, but is moving to Grand Rapids, MI in a couple of weeks, unfortunately for me but lucky for those who can get to see her. Her name is Stephanie and she is a great stylist who really understands vintage hair. I wish I could still go to her after she moves, but it is 2 hours away from me and too far with the gas prices as they are. I said if she ends up closer to Lansing, MI, I could probably still see her. know the answer to this question, but would any of you have stylist recommendations for the Omaha, NE/western IA area? I was calling a few local salons, and the only one that said they'd be capable of doing fingerwaving is an "ethnic" salon. It's worth a shot!
