[huh] I thought the same exact thing. I know there is a remake coming out some time next year maybe that has something to do with it. TCM has been known to show non-classic movies that deal with classic (or near classic) times. It's shown some Woody Allen from the '70s and movies like Devil in a Blue Dress.

A remake? After looking at the IMDb listing for it, beyond the gimmick of John Travolta playing Edna Turnblad, all I can ask is why? Granted, the original was fun and kitschy, and I do confess to getting a bit of gulity pleasure from watching Jon Waters films, but I don't think it's worth remaking it.

Cheers!

"Why oh why" is what I keep telling myself as I read this. I see no benefit (creatively or economically) to remake this film.
The director Adam Shankman is listed as a choreographer in his IMDB bio. Apparently he is using this vehicle to make the jump to director.
I do not find Travolta in drag as much of a gimmick or attraction to see a remake of this movie.

I agree but I believe with the attraction of the play, everyone wants to jump on the bandwagon so to speak. [huh] I'll watch it when it comes on cable, maybe.

As far as its classic status being premature, it is almost 20 years old. Two decades is probably a reasonable time to look back and say whether or not the film has lasted. I actually enjoy Hairspray a lot more now than I did when it came out (I thought John Waters was totally selling out after his partial sell-out with Crybaby).

The remake is just a terrible joke. When will John Travolta finally go away? (Reasons to hate Quentin Tarantino #173: Disinterred John Travolta.) And now I know that John Waters has sold out once and for all for good and proper. HE WAS IN JACKASS 2!!!!

Awwwwwooo!
You dont remake ANY John Waters film. Its tacky kitsch. Its good to have one tacky fur lined lampshade, but if it brakes, you sure as hell dont go buy another one.
