Note: Your hair is straight and fine, and won't look anything like Elvis or Depp's. The way your hair is and your cowlicks will prevent you from achieving said looks.

My hair looks like either or, because of the way my hair grows and how thick my hair is.

I guess so, as I've got very straight hair. Anyway, I was under the impression that Elvis did have straight, "fine" hair, according to an interview with his hairdresser, Larry Geller. I think by the point of that picture, '68, he was already styling Elvis' hair too. You're probably right about the lack of pomade, though. I think by this point, with the exception of the '68 Comeback Special, he favored a drier look to his hair. In the Comeback, it looks like he used something slick, but allowed hair to fall on his forehead.

By cowlick, do you mean "whorl?" My whorl, or that round looking bald spot on the head, is on my left, if one were to look at it from behind me.

That will come after a little while if you slick back your hair with just a dab of pomade. If you want to accelerate the process, come your hair and then shake your head to make it fall.

I might have to give that a try. Apparently, I can't really achieve this style with a "dry look," so I'll need something to coerce it into the style.

Anyway, I'm still trying to discover a length of hair that works for me, in a way that could support two or three different styles. Basically, I'm getting the impression that my forehead and hairline is rather high (I think it's just naturally high, not receding), so I'm trying to find a style that will put less emphasis on that, but look reasonably conservative (but with a slightly edgy look to it) or classic enough, without being very trendy. I'd probably look awful with a modern fauxhawk hairstyle for example, and I see that a lot these days on other guys in my area.

Me too, actually. I'm wondering that if these men did not apply products to their hair, their hair would look curly or very wavy? I'm under the assumption that pomade and hair oil products can control these hair textures and make them somewhat straighter, like in the pictures of the gentlemen above.

I used Royal Crown Pomade, but not too much. Just a dab as Yeps suggested. To get a similar look of the pictures I posted of Presley and Depp, I've got to grow my hair down longer.

Oils and tonics would actually make the hair wavy and not straight.

I never thought I´d say it (as I´m a big fan of the classic side parted look) but the hairstyle you have now fits very well regarding your facial shape etc. It looks good!

Agreed. Sorry, but your hair is to thin for sideburns. I have the same problem (although I don't want to have sideburns anymore) The middle parted style is good but I would stay with shorter hair in the back and sides...

Alright, thanks for the input. Even my dad said he liked it too, later in the day. He must have noticed something different going on. It seems that the amount of Royal Crown I used was just enough to hold it in place, and my hair did not look particularly greasy either, just a bit shiny. I'm sure I'll be sporting this style pretty often, then.

Right, I find it pretty annoying, and I've been attempting to grow them longer (not necessarily in length, but more like wider in the side). That does help with regard to making them more apparent. I've been told they actually look good, but my hair there is particularly thin. Generally, I do favor a short back and sides. I went to the barber a couple of weeks ago, and basically got that, but not cut too close.

I think I'm going to be keeping the sideburns right now, and keep them growing, in addition to getting a beard growth this summer, possibly. I'm not sure that I would want to keep it if I knew for sure my family's headed to Europe. At that point, I'd opt to be clean-shaven, and try to be more presentable than rugged.

Thank you, Flat-Top, I'll have to think about that one. It seems that so far, I'm preferring longer hair on the top, though. I know I had my hair shorter before, so I think in order to get the regular contour again, I'll have to have my hair cut an inch or an inch and a half above the eyebrows, and tapered well on the sides. Come to think of it, I had a very similar, although somewhat longer style a few days ago, and it looked like the picture, except not shaved on the lower sides.

Good, I think you should grow it out nice and long so you can have it cut in that classic Depp/Dillinger style and see how it hangs, if you'll pardon the pun.

Sure, I'm thinking maybe this summer, I'll allow it to grow like that, and cut where necessary.

I think having somewhat longer hair is more practical for me, as I don't exactly have the commitment it takes to maintain a short back and sides cut all the time. I go to get my hair cut every three months, just about, on average.

The Dillenger/O'Connell/Darmody look is pretty much just short back and sides with the top long enough to slick back, but when you get it cut really short on the sides, it stays manageable for quite some time.
