I can barely look at this thread, it makes me so sad. My last great haircut was a high fade I dubbed "The Morrissey."

I like to think of it as a good note to go out on. That being said, a mere 4 years later, my hair is all but gone...

That's a great look.

Gene and Twill, sharp looking haircuts in those pictures, and Locklear, what movie is that photo from?

As for me, lately I've been thinking about growing my hair a bit longer before getting my next haircut. Something sort of like Clint Eastwood in the mid/late 1960s, but not quite as long as the Dirty Harry look. Having got my last haircut done in late June, I'm already getting closer to the look I'm after, and I might even try to grow a beard too. Almost a year ago, I tried to grow one, and I couldn't get past three months before I shaved it all off; it wasn't long, it was patchy and scraggly growth. Hopefully, if the faster and somewhat fuller growth of my sideburns lately is any indication, the rest of my facial hair should grow in better as well.

A new traditional barber shop just opened in York, PA, called Smiling John's. I've seen his work before and it's really top notch. He knows his vintage haircuts. I'll be making the drive up there for a trim in the next day or two. Full report to follow.

I'm pretty pleased with my haircut at the moment. I haven't found a classic mens barber in town,
so I got this done at Cosmo
Don't know if it's any good, but here goes:

Apologies for the crap camera quality.

You can always go to Rotterdam!

Rotterdam is a bit far pricewise. I know it might not be very long in the States (given the size of the states in general), but a 2 hour trainride is a bit far
I do understand your point though. Schorem does good work. I wish someone would just set up shop in Arnhem…

It looks awesome Kabel! You should go even shorter on the sides next time.

Duly noted, shorter sides it will be next time. I took up Ryanc's advice on combing/styling it.

Here is an assortment of classic haircuts from 1949, collected from one of my favorite films, The Man Who Wasn't There:

"The Butch"

"The Flat Top"

"The Ivy"

"The Vanguard"

"The Crew"

"The Junior Contour"

Along with the hair styles and detailed reconstruction of a 40's barber shop, this film is rich in period detail and presents a highly unique, twisting plot. I, myself, sport the Ivy cut. :)

Not sure where you got some of the names for these cuts but they're a little off.

How frequently do you guys get haircuts? It's been about three and a half months since I've got one, and currently I have a sort of parted, moptop look going on. The back of my hair is too long to do an authentic looking pompadour anymore. To really preserve the classic style, it seems that I'd have to visit the barber every month and a half or so. I would have got my haircut this month, but my barber's on vacation for another couple of weeks. I think I'll end up getting the same haircut as last time, the "Public Enemy":

Seems that "Crew" and "Butch" are switched...

Maybe I'm wrong, but I always thought the Butch was the buzz-cut looking one (perfectly round shape), and the Crew has the front of the hair turned up like a flat top, just like the pictures and their titles are already.

I've understood it to be that, "butch" haircuts were used with Butch Wax, where it would "butch" the hair (stick it up in the front.)

After literally four months without one, I got a hair cut. I showed him a picture of Depp as Dillinger like last time, and got my hair cut very similarly, keeping the fringe long and sides short.
